Overview

Orphaned at a young age, Hallie Mediate was raised by her (slightly) crazy Great Aunt Grace on the wrong side of the tracks in Cincinnati. Hallie dreamed of escaping her hometown and never looking back. After putting herself through college, landing her dream job in Chicago, and starting a romance with her handsome running partner Bo Pompillio, life is finally exactly as she wants it.

That is, until she's transferred back to the hometown. Not wanting her past to cross paths with her future, Hallie puts her relationship with Bo on hold.

When she arrives in town, Hallie finds crazy Aunt Grace rummaging through a dumpster looking for the "perfect" welcome home gift for her niece. That's just the beginning. After that, Aunt Grace stays busy by dying her stolen poodle's hair pink and leaving the dog on her apartment roof to pee, throwing bricks out the window at passing neighbors, and climbing every flag pole to kiss the ornamental eagle.

Hallie finds some sanity at a local jewelry-making class where she uncovers a hidden talent for beading. When her talent is discovered by a major department store jewelry buyer, Hallie realizes that what she had in Chicago might not have been her dream life after all.

When faced with the choice of moving back to Chicago and Bo or taking a leap of faith to start her own jewelry company (with Aunt Grace in tow), Hallie has to make a decision. Will she let her past and her future collide, or will she or keep searching for the happiness she may already have found?

The words can't describe how much I LOVE his book They say you can never go back home, but Hallie does and something wonderful happened; she discovered her meaning in life and embraced it from her friendships, her career-path and her crazy Aunt Grace. There are several laugh-out-loud moments that will tickle your funny bone as well as some tender moments. This is an endearing story that will capture your heart.

What could be better than a book that brings a young woman home to where she belongs, has a rascally pooch, and centers around beading and discovering and following your dream? Carpe Bead 'Em has it all. Hallie's been trying to escape her past, but, as we all know, that's impossible. She ends up back with her Aunt Grace, and along the way, Hallie discovers what's really important to her. She's like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, clicking her heels together to realize that what she's wanted has been there the whole time, if only she'd been willing to see it. This is the perfect beach read as we roll into summer!

Not only will you laugh out-loud over Aunt Grace's antics, and the pink poodle, but find Hallie's journey inspirational and touching. This is a book that's hard to put down, and Hallie finds herself in a life in her old city.

Hallie Mediate has the life she has always dreamed of. Chicago is where she wants to be. Unfortunately Fate and Gucci have other plans. She's going back home to Cincinnati. Why if life so unfair? Hallie finds a new passion. She loves beading. Her mind is constantly coming up with new designs. She is a different person. She finds that seeing her Aunt Grace brings back memories of her childhood. This woman gave up her own desires to raise her. Suddenly she sees everything in a new light. Hallie has grown up. I loved this story. Hallie is a feisty woman who is willing to take a chance on her passion. If only her romance with Bo would end with a HEA. Hallie needs to trust not let her insecurities lead her to rash actions. Bo is a keeper. There is more to him than a sexy man. I enjoyed this story by Tonya Kappes. Aunt Grace was a wonderful character. I was glad that Hallie realized how lucky she was to have this woman in her life. Carpe Bead'em was a touching story that had me shedding a few tears.

This just might be my favorite Tonya Kappes book. The story of Hallie finding herself when things don't go as planned was very interesting, and easy to latch on to. The characters were easy to connect to as well. I felt like Hallie's friends were my friends, and I was right there for each and every girls' night. My absolute favorite part of the book was the emotions. I can't really put into words how much of a fantastic job Tonya did putting all the feelings to page. It usually takes quite a bit too get me teary-eyed while I'm reading, and this one did it. I think we all have those in-between moments, and Tonya Kappes managed to make a magnificent story out of one that just about everyone can relate too.

This book was a total delight to read, Tonya always seems to be able to make me engage with the characters as a reader and pulls laughs and tears from me with her writing. In this book Carpe Bead 'Em the story is centered around Hallie the new regional manager for Gucci and her friends Lucy, Georgia and Prudence, Hallie's Aunt Grace, Uncle Jimmy and several other supporting characters. Hallie joined a running group two years ago to train for a marathon and to get a little closer to Bo. Hallie has spent the last two years running behind Bo. Bo is handsome and sweet, owns a blues bar and has not shown an interest in Hallie other than as a friend. Enter Piper ex-regional manager for Gucci and currently eyeing Bo and it seems that Bo likes Piper in the way Hallie was hoping he would like her. Hallie's Aunt Grace and Uncle Jimmy are old and the only family that Hallie has left, but man they sure do get on her nerves, which is why she is glad that she lives five hours away from them and only goes to visit once every six weeks. Things change when Hallie is suddenly sent back to her hometown to get a new Gucci boutique up and running. Gucci has rented her a nice apartment off of Hyde Park and as Hallie settles in she starts making new friends like Addy the owner of Cafe Beginnings the local coffee shop, and Dee from One Bead At A Time the local lapidary shop. Hallie quickly finds out that she has a gift for design when she makes her first beaded bracelet at One Bead At A Time. With Dee's encouragement she begins to make bracelets to sell at Dee's store. Suddenly Hallie isn't so lonely. Hallie makes another new friend out of her neighbor Wilson. She also unexpectedly finds herself the new owner of Henry a pink poodle. Yes, I said pink poodle. I told you Tonya will get a smile, laugh and even a few tears out of you when you read this book. There are some twists and unexpected turns in Carpe Bead 'Em that even I didn't see coming. Check it out you will not be sorry!

I received a digital copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. With Carpe Bead'em, you didn't have some of the mystery story-line you are used to with Tonya's books, but it had every bit of her quirk and humor. Everyone has a "crazy Aunt Grace", and can relate to the predicaments Hallie found herself in. I felt every emotion in reading this story; I was right there with Hallie. This is a perfect romantic comedy, but make sure you've cleared your schedule. This book will not put you down.

I'm actually torn with book. I started out liking the characters well enough, and the circumstances with Hallie leaving her beloved Chicago for Cincinnati kept me interested. I had a problem with a few things but overlooked it until about halfway through and it started to annoy me. Hallie is upset moving back to Ohio, understandable but it's a move up with her job and temporary. She has a huge crush on Bo but it seems every time he tells her he needs to speak to her seriously, she blows him off. Her aunt may not seem as crazy if Hallie would put her foot down on a few things instead of just blowing her off as "crazy". She's upset with Bo instead of confronting him she runs away. By the end I was annoyed with Hallie but I did like most of the secondary characters who kept me reading. This was just my feelings others look at it differently, you decide.
