Excerpt from Carpet Courtship: A Story; Of Some Imperfect Persons

At half-past ten o'clock on the evening of the last Tuesday in May the drawing-room door of Mrs. Murchison's flat at South Kensington opened and a servant announced, -

"Mr. Everard Rothesay."

He was a tall, well-built, pleasant-looking young man with dark hair and a fair-complexioned, shaven face. His overcoat was thrown back, showing his evening clothes; his bearing was gay and debonair, and he looked as though he had not yet begun to take the world very seriously.

"I am sure you were surprised by my letter," said Susannah, coming impulsively to greet him.

"I was very pleased," he answered.

"But confess you were immensely surprised," she insisted, sitting down in a low chair.

"That you should ask me to call?" he suggested.
