Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kip Wilson
One of 10 books in the "War Planes" series produced by Capstone Press, this book presents the retired F-14 Tomcats, "remembered as one of the world's top fighter planes." The first chapter immediately engages readers by placing them with a F-14 crew as they use radar-guided missiles to shoot down enemy planes over the Indian Ocean, then looks at the three models of the F-14. Subsequent chapters outline the aircraft's engines and radar, detail the weapons and systems of the Tomcats and describe the aircraft's retirement and replacement by the F/A-18 Super Hornet, which is covered in another volume in the series. Authentic color photographs throughout the book, including a center spread labeling the parts of the aircraft, draw the reader in and are a great supplement to the text. Bullet points at the beginning of each chapter will help struggling readers know what they will learn about in the coming chapter. Interesting "Edge Facts" about the Tomcats and a short but useful glossary complete the picture. Readers will enjoy being pulled into the realm of a well-known, but no longer used aircraft through this book. Reviewer: Kip Wilson
