"So carrots and sticks don't work in some situations. Okay, I understand that now. So then what DOES motivate employees? What theory have you got that's better? What should I do instead?" I feel these are the questions managers and supervisors ask themselves after being told carrots and sticks don't work...THIS BOOK ANSWERS THOSE QUESTIONS!!!
I actually read this after finishing Dan Pink's 'Drive' and feared it would be very similar - a lot of 'fluff' and 'filler', a boring history lesson, repetition, and basically just a total of a few pages of new knowledge scattered throughout the book. Luckily, this book is nothing like 'Drive'...
Dr. Marciano has discovered the one common factor amongst all the different models of employee motivation: that secret ingredient is RESPECT. Don't let the caps fool you - this is not just another acronym for a new model. Respect for coworkers and managers/supervisors IS the lynchpin of employee motivation. What the author does so well is pick apart what respect means (hence the acronym) and offer a seemingly endless amount of ways to measure and build respect in the workplace.
Whereas Pink's main topic is extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation (joy of the task vs. rewards), Marciano's main topic is respect. Like I said, this book is completely different than Pink's book - in a GREAT way. Proving why carrots and sticks don't work takes Marciano just one chapter; the rest is Marciano's groundbreaking ideas about respect that have the potential to truly change a company's culture for the better - maximizing revenues and minimizing costs. There is no doubt in my mind that this book and the Paul's ideas are a GOLD MINE that can be tapped into by all business managers, supervisors, leaders and employees who aim to be in these positions in the future.
Lastly, I just wanted to point out that this book is very well-organized and well-written. What really set this book apart from 'Drive' was Dr. Marciano being able to provide real life experiences that any employee could relate to - especially at the beginning of the book.

I came across Dr. Marciano's book as a result of a professional association book club. I found it very relevant and timely! It's a must-read for managers, leaders, HR & OD Professionals alike!
This fantastic, quick read has relatable "stories from the trenches" that any manager, new or seasoned, can identify with. In addition, Dr. Marciano provides tips and ideas for implementing the key aspects of his RESPECT model, the foundation of which is the "T", trust. Dr. Marciano brings credibility to his work through his impressive educational and work background in psychology and assessment as well as by sharing personal examples with the reader.
It's not rocket-science, and Dr. Marciano does a great job of driving that home, it doesn't take an earth shattering revelation to engage employees, increase their discretionary effort and increase profits and productivity, just some simple "R.E.S.P.E.C.T"
