Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Veronica Bartles
Part of the "What Grows in Your Garden" series, this book is a basic first step to learning about carrots. Rooney answers basic questions, such as "What do carrots grow from?" "When is it time to pick carrots?" and "Why are carrots good for you?" The photographs are colorful, vibrant and eye-catching, with bright, inset labels to point out the details mentioned within the text. The information presented in the text is basic enough to hold the somewhat-limited attention of the youngest pre-readers, making this book ideal for read-aloud situations. A glossary at the back of the book provides detailed definitions for the more uncommon words, providing a little bit more depth into the subject for older researchers. Although Rooney does not give us an in-depth look into the varieties and uses for carrots, she does provide enough information to pique the curiosity of young readers. It would be nice if, in addition to the glossary, there was a list of resources for further reading for those who wish to explore deeper into the fascinating world of carrots. Children looking for information for a school assignment may become frustrated at this lack. However, those who are reading the book just for fun will enjoy the fast-paced treatment of the subject.
