Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The child's face on the cover can either smile at you or offer a frown. Part of the "Pick & Choose" series, these board books have a face that can be turned on each page. The questions posed range from "Does Tanek like milk?" to "Would Alika like a drink of water?" Depending on the child's mood or desire just to have fun, the frowns and smiles can easily flip. They seem to be secured fairly well and they are easy to turn. The toddlers are simply drawn without excessive detail relating to them or their surroundings. The children have dots for eyes and just a line for the smile or frown. Kids should be able to identify with at least one of the characters since they are different sexes and represent a variety of ethnic groups. The book should empower kids and also be useful if they are not talking—it can serve as a way of communicating. Other books in the series include Bed or Bath?, Wind or Rain?, and Teddy or Train? Kirkus Reviews
An ingenious interactive book allows readers to decide for the characters what they love-and what they detest. "Does Tanek like milk? / . . . / Is Shen going to chew the carrot?" Strung within a diecut hole, a face of perfect Peanuts roundness is suspended, one side beaming, the other glumly frowning. With each question, readers can reach out and spin the face to answer it accordingly. The book's audience is at an age when adults constantly seek to con them-"Of course you like eggplant!"-so this opportunity for readers to take the emotional driver's seat is downright liberating. Children's names and skin colors allow for a broad ethnic representation in this and the three companion volumes: Teddy or Train? (9781846432415), Bath or Bed? (9781846432392) and Wind or Rain? (9781846432408). (Ages 618 mos.)
