Meet the Author

P. G. Wodehouse (1881-1975) was born in Surrey, educated in London, and spent much of his life in Southampton, Long Island, becoming an American citizen in 1955. In a literary career spanning more than seventy years, he published more than ninety books, twenty film scripts, and collaborated on more than thirty plays and musical comedies.

Jonathan Cecil's considerable TV and film appearances include The Rector's Wife, Just William, Murder Most Horrid, and As You Like It.

Biography

Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in 1881 in Guildford, the son of a civil servant, and educated at Dulwich College. He spent a brief period working for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank before abandoning finance for writing, earning a living by journalism and selling stories to magazines.

An enormously popular and prolific writer, he produced about 100 books. In Jeeves, the ever resourceful "gentleman's personal gentleman", and the good-hearted young blunderer Bertie Wooster, he created two of the best known and best loved characters in twentieth century literature. Their exploits, first collected in Carry On, Jeeves, were chronicled in fourteen books, and have been repeatedly adapted for television, radio and the stage. Wodehouse also created many other comic figures, notably Lord Emsworth, the Hon. Galahad Threepwood, Psmith and the numerous members of the Drones Club. He was part-author and writer of fifteen straight plays and 250 lyrics for some 30 musical comedies. The Times hailed him as a "comic genius recognized in his lifetime as a classic and an old master of farce."

P. G. Wodehouse said, "I believe there are two ways of writing novels. One is mine, making a sort of musical comedy without music and ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right deep down into life and not caring a damn ...."

Wodehouse married in 1914 and took American citizenship in 1955. He was created a Knight of the British Empire in the 1975 New Year's Honours List. In a BBC interview he said that he had no ambitions left now that he had been knighted and there was a waxwork of him in Madame Tussaud's. He died on St. Valentine's Day, 1975, at the age of ninety-three.

As near a dramatic radio show as can be!

In this collection the brilliant reader of THE THIRD MAN and A NIGHT TO REMEMEBR brings us eight unabridged tales of the lovable air-head, Bertie Wooster and his Personal Gentleman's Gentleman, Jeeves. It begins with JEEVES TAKES CHARGE, recounting how Jeeves came to be in Berties service and continues through eight of the stories from CARRY ON JEEVES. Martin Jarvis, who played Jeeves in the musical BY JEEVES, is clearly the man for the job. His more than capable abilities make this one of the finest one man, books on tape ever. He weaves through the characters with amazing vocal dexterity making this the closest thing to a full cast dramatization that you're likely to find. Of course the BBC did many of the Jeeves and Wooster tales in the seventies (each one a gem as well) but I never heard them do any of the stories in this collection. If you enjoy Wodehouse, Jeeves and Wooster, quality comedy or books on tape in general you will not be disappointed with this collection.

    Jeeves Rules!

Wodehouse and his wonderful Jeeves, along with John Mortimer's Rumpole, are among the greatest characters to come out of British literature, and especially British humor. Hysterically funny in the classic sarcasm of the British pen, I would recommend Jeeves to anyone, and the more the merrier; terrible pun completely intended!
