Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Lorimer
The invention of cars, cars of the future, race cars, police cars…a whole lot is crammed in to this book. Cars are an eternally popular subject with children, and any young car fan will be happy to flip through this. It isn't remarkably better than any other book about cars your child might pull off the shelf at the library, but it's not bad, either. The photographs are useful and interesting (for example, one two-page spread shows a black-and-white photo of an early production line, and a full-color photo of a modern robotic assembly). A brave attempt is made at explaining how engines work, and is surprisingly successful given the vocabulary constraints. The environmental and social costs of a car-centered society are not mentioned. Includes a glossary, timeline, Web site recommendations, and an index. From the "Mighty Machines" series.
