Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Alissa Lauzon
Michael Cart's name is legendary in the field of teen librarianship; he is past president of YALSA, a columnist and reviewer for Booklist magazine, and the author or editor of multiple books, including novels for teens and professional resources for the librarians who serve them. His newest professional resource provides his top 200 book picks published for adults between 1991 and 2011 that are of interest to teen readers. Divided into fiction and nonfiction chapters, the title covers a wide range of genres and includes many graphic novels and Alex Award Winners in both categories. Cart's passion for the topic clearly shines through in his annotations which are easy to read, accessible, and make the titles interesting. His annotations often include personal notes and suggestions for readalikes or related titles. This is definitely a resource meant for browsing, not for use in the midst of a reader's advisory transaction. Unfortunately, not all the titles included are still in print based on the ISBNs listed in the book. In several instances, Cart uses an outofprint hardcover ISBN when the book is available in paperback, which limits the books usefulness as a collection development tool. While not everyone will agree with Cart's choices, this is a great resource as a starting point for librarians who need some guidance in finding adult titles that will appeal to teenage readers. School Library Journal

Cart uses his years of experience, reviews from Booklist, VOYA, and School Library Journal, plus criteria used for the Alex Awards to choose the adult books, both fiction and nonfiction, he considers to be of interest to young adults. Chosen titles are annotated and presented in alphabetical order with category symbols such as GF for general fiction. Also included is an index of authors and titles, and appendixes of titles "Not to be missed" and "Something Entirely Different," which would be more valuable if the titles were all different from those included in the annotated lists. While the book is of possible use to new librarians with little collection-development experience and/or a library with a limited YA collection, most experienced librarians will see no need for such a volume, relying instead on review journals.—Suanne B.
