Overview

In 1950, a group of Pablo Casals' friends came up with the idea of having a Bach festival at Prades, France, in the hope that the great cellist would be tempted to join in. He did, and the Casals Festival was born -- an annual gathering of some of the greatest musicians of the day. This 13-CD set collects performances recorded at the festival between 1953 and 1960, and while the first 8 discs consist of previously released material, the remaining 5 present new discoveries. And the repertory list is predictably mouthwatering, including, for instance, all the Beethoven cello sonatas. Casals (1876–1973) was quite advanced in years at the time of these performances, and his playing shows signs of strain. Indeed, his interpretations have neither the technical polish one is used to from modern recordings nor the kind of intensity one expects from live concerts. But what marvelous music making it is! It's as if one were sitting in Casals' living room rather than in a concert hall; the sense of friendly give-and-take is palpable. The fluid, relaxed character of the Mozart Piano Quartet in E Flat (K. 493) is a perfect example of the overall style -- and it should be mentioned that the contribution of William Kapell, who did not record much in the way of chamber music, makes this addition to the program especially valuable. (He's joined by Arthur Grumiaux, Milton Thomas, and Paul Tortelier -- a star lineup.) The transfers are excellent, too, though the sound quality is obviously limited. Still, for chamber music aficionados, that's a small price to pay for such a treasure trove as this. And, speaking of small prices, this set is a terrific bargain.
