Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Niko Keys, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago)
Description: This is a new edition of a major textbook on the basic science of toxicology intended for both students and practitioners. Its emphasis is on mechanisms of toxicity. The last edition was published in 1991.
Purpose: It provides information on the many facets of toxicology, especially on the principles, concepts, and modes of thought that are the foundation of the discipline.
Audience: This book is written for graduate courses in toxicology. In addition, scientists from other disciplines may find relevant sections. This is an accurate target audience, in my opinion.
Features: The illustrations are well done and absolutely necessary. The text is extensively referenced and up-to-date. The book is neat in appearance.
Assessment: This continues to be the premier reference book on the basic science of toxicology. The new edition is a timely update of a very useful book.

**** The fourth edition (1991, ed. by Mary O. Amdur et al.) is cited in Brandon-Hill. A text for, or an adjunct to, graduate courses in toxicology, providing information on the principles, concepts, and modes of thought that are the foundation of the discipline. The present edition is revised and updated to reflect the marked progress in toxicology during this decade. It adds three new chapters, on toxicokinetics, mechanisms of toxicity, and toxic responses of the endocrine system, as well as an appendix on recommended limits for exposure to chemicals.
