PreS-Gr 2-Each volume in this beginner animal series presents basic information in simple language on appealing two-page spreads illustrated by line drawings on one side and a closeup photo of a single animal on the other. Two pages of questions at the end of each book add to its value for primary school collections. Also recommended for public libraries and bookstores. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Although all animals need shelter, each species has a unique way of acquiring it. This nonfiction book, part of the "Descubre los animales" series, examines the way various animals ensure their safety, warmth and comfort by selecting houses suited to their lifestyles. Brown bears enjoy sleeping through the winters snuggled away in caves and resting during the summers under trees or in holes. Moles prefer to dig tunnels and holes underground with their sharp claws and make nests with plants and leaves. Field mice weave strips of leaves around plant stems to create a nest with no entrance. To enter, the mice pick a side and wiggle in. Marmots find shelter in holes underground while snails carry their houses on their backs. In addition to learning about these animals, readers will also become familiar with the living arrangements of beavers, rabbits, squirrels and wasps. The sections about each animal include both full-page, color photographs as well as cute and playful illustrations. The final two pages also include questions for review. Not only will this book familiarize young children with various animal types, but it would also provide an effective resource for older children working on science or nature projects. 2001, Two-Can Publishing, $9.95 and $5.95.
