Description: The 55 simulated clinical cases in this book illustrate the more common presentations encountered in family medicine in an easy to understand format that serves well as an introduction to clinical medicine. This update of the 2007 first edition represents the breadth of the specialty better, using comprehensive case presentations and preparing medical students for the national boards and USMLE.
Purpose: The purpose of the Case File series is to present clinical material in the form of relevant cases, followed by appropriate discussion and review, and ending with a number of comprehensive questions that reflect the national board questions. These are worthy objectives and the book fulfills the need to present clinical scenarios in the format seen in practice and provide an introduction to clinical medicine for medical students.
Audience: The targeted audience is third-year medical students starting a clinical rotation in family medicine. As evidenced by the common usage of this book in the medical school at our facility and across the country, it is appropriate for the audience.
Features: The unique format, which includes definition, clinical approach, evaluation, and management, allows students to review each case on its own. The clinical pearls that highlight the most valid points in the case and the comprehensive questions and answers that enhance learning and retention are the best features. Because each case stands on its own, it is easy for students to study each aspect of a case without having to go through the whole book. Since the book serves as a reflection of general cases most commonly seen in practice, it is not a comprehensive review of all the possible clinical presentations and the list of references is abbreviated.
Assessment: This book is widely used by medical students in our facility, who view it as easy to understand and inclusive of most of the clinical material that they encounter daily in their rotation. Compared to a textbook such as Robert Rakel's Textbook of Family Medicine, 7th edition (Elsevier, 2007), or to Current Diagnosis and Treatment in Family Medicine , 2nd edition, South-Paul et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2007), this is an easy to use casebook that students can actually carry to the clinic and use directly. The second edition incorporates more relevant clinical material and questions that prepare the students better for their national boards. From a practical standpoint, this edition has been better received by students than the previous edition.
