Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Celso Agner, MD, MS, MSc (Michigan Neurology Partners)
Description: Medical board examinations require accurate integration of basic sciences with clinical scenarios. The myth of the difficulty of the neurosciences for the average medical student is dispensed with this book.
Purpose: The main purpose is to explain neuroscience in the context of a variety of clinical scenarios.
Audience: Medical, nursing, physical therapy, and occupational therapy students are the main audience.
Features: Four authors contribute the 48 real-life clinical cases, and a couple of unique features set this apart from other review tools. First, the presentation of clinical cases fits right into the current needs of health science students, since it reflects their real-life experience and the usefulness of neuroscience. Second, it merges bench science with clinical practice and allows students to better grasp difficult neuroscience concepts. Incorporation of neuroscience pearls at the end of each chapter helps the student focus on the key points. The illustrations are adequate and the references, up to date.
Assessment: This is a very useful book for health science students. The integration of real-life clinical cases with neuroscience concepts helps students to focus on the important aspects. This is a superb contribution to the field with little in common with other review books in this field.
