There is no greater tracker in America than Tom Brown. His intimate knowledge of the natural environment, by sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch, has made him renowned as a detective of the outdoors. For decades he has been called upon to find missing children, escaped animals, dangerous criminals—anything that can walk, crawl, or lope through the wilderness. Overview

His hunting expertise, and his call to find harmony in nature, have been chronicled in several of his books including The Tracker and Awakening Spirits.

Now, in Case Files of the Tracker, Tom Brown reveals sixteen of his adventures for the first time, including:

·         A desperate race to reach a diabetic child before he suffers from insulin shock

·         The treacherous struggle to capture an armed convict that left Tom with a bullet in his back

·         His Tracking Team’s pursuit of a tiger on the loose in the wilds of New Jersey

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Brown, founder of the Tracker School in New Jersey (which offers classes in wilderness survival and environmental protection) and author of more than 20 books about wilderness and tracking, explains the skills used by trackers and discusses some of his most difficult cases. Trained by an elderly man, a surrogate grandfather, Brown learns from this "coyote teacher" how to "read the Earth like an open book and unravel her mysteries." In turn, Brown ends up showing others how to survive in the wilderness, find lost children, escaped prisoners, etc. Not everyone will take to Brown's methods, particularly his focus on the spiritual world. He explains, "I lay still, frozen in time, slipping into the Sacred Silence of the soul, in a place of splendid nonexistence that creates a state of invisibility to all that passes by." Brown chronicles several key adventures including searching for a diabetic child and hunting for an armed convict. The writing is strong and evocative; when Brown describes searching for a lost tiger, readers will empathize with him and the other trackers. Outdoorspeople, especially those familiar with tracking or hunting, are the most likely audience. (Dec.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
KLIATT
Tom Brown, Jr. is billed as "America's Greatest Outdoorsman" and this collection of cases is part of a series of books he has written on either survival or in remembrance of experiences in the wild. In an earlier book, Grandfather, Brown's experiences as a child with an Apache Indian named Stalking Wolf illuminated his process of learning hunting and tracking skills. Stalking Wolf, aka Grandfather, is never far away in the present title, however, having made an indelible impression on his apprentice. Insights from Grandfather pop into Brown's mind and are never questioned, for "no matter how unrelated it seems at the time to what I am doing, in the end it has great bearing and insight." (p. 174) No matter if he is being asked to find a lost nine-year-old child or a tiger on the loose in New Jersey, there is always time for Brown to express how much he is at home in the wilderness and how few people understand him. "The earth provides everything I need and then some. After all, why pack anything if you are just going into your own house? For me, having a steel knife in my pocket is as good as camping in a recreational vehicle at a Disney World campground." (p.169) For those who like a combination of pseudo-Zen and self-absorption with their wilderness stories, Case Files of the Tracker will be appealing. An optional purchase for most libraries. KLIATT Codes: SA—Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2003, Penguin Putnam, Berkley, 190p., Ages 15 to adult.

Library Journal
Brown (The Tracker) is today's guru of woodsmanship and wilderness survival. The score or so of books he has written in the field make him the 21st-century equivalent of Horace Kephart, the dean of American campers and outdoorsmen whose Camping & Woodcraft has remained constantly in print for a century. After an introductory chapter on the art and science of tracking, Brown shares five case files. Collectively, they offer a great deal of insight into Brown's modus operandi-a combination of superb woodscraft and spirituality-and they certainly make for gripping reading. For those who cherish adventure, love the natural world, or have enjoyed Brown's many field guides, this book is highly recommended.-Jim Casada, Outdoor Writers Assoc. of America, Rock Hill, SC Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

It Will Inspire, It Will Inform

I'm ordering this book since I just finished reading THE TRACKER, THE AWAKENING SPIRIT,AND THE SEARCH, and am currently reading THE VISION. Tom's books provide all the spiritual insight and inspiration I seek. Thank you, Grandfather. Thank you, Tom.

If this is anything like his previous books....

If Case Files Of The Tracker is anything like any of Mr. Brown's other books, this one will be hot. He has simple, straightforward style of writing that takes nothing away from his storytelling, and ultimately, his method of teaching others about the natural world around us. Perhaps the best thing he does in his previous works is that he makes his knowledge--and experiences--accessible to everyone, from the hardcore outdoors enthiusiast to the armchair adventurer. I am eagerly awaiting the availability of this title, as are many others. Order many, because this book will soon become a classic and won't stay long on shelves.
