Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Robert J. Rydman, MS, MPA, PhD (University of Illinois at Chicago)
Description: This book describes models of practice as well as practical tools, procedures, and role orientations for case managers in health care organizations.
Purpose: The objectives are to present a conceptual framework and practical operating procedures for case managers in health care organizations.
Audience: Although the author has targeted all case managers in health care, this book is especially germane to those case managers with a nursing background or mission. I believe that there is enough universal content to appeal to case managers from other disciplines, e.g., psychology, social work, anthropology, sociology, public health practice, etc.
Features: The text is black-and-white with ample illustrations and tabularizations. Reference quality and quantity vary from chapter to chapter but are generally acceptable. This is a basic text from a theoretical standpoint with experiential content derived largely from the discipline of nursing. In spite of specific criticisms, it adds to a field hungry for people to articulate their experiences.
Assessment: I applaud the author and contributors for their effort in bringing their experience and knowledge to the practitioners of case management. I hope that the readers will realize that the heavy representation of a nursing perspective must be filtered for its value to their unique case management environment and not taken as universal patterns of operation.
