Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
Everybody loves pizza; the question is, will everybody love this book? As the story opens, brother and sister puzzle-solvers Penny and Pete Pizzarelli learn that a new bookstore is opening next door to their family pizza parlor. (A new bookstore? The first of many improbable scenarios.) The siblings' initial enthusiasm turns into curiosity, as strange things begin to unfold: books disappear, then reappear in the wrong place; customers trip over books, or have a shelf of books fall on their head; work accomplished the night before is undone by morning. Is someone trying to sabotage the new store? If so, who? And why? Luckily, someone is conveniently sending Penny and Pete encoded messages so they can solve the case! There are three components to this book: story, puzzles, and pictures. The illustrations, which include a checkered-tablecloth at the top of each chapter, and a slice of pizza to mark breaks within the chapter, are clever and fun. The puzzles are plentiful, but vary in difficulty. While the answers are all included in the back, some are also explained in the text without warning (which could disappoint a reader still trying to work them out), while others receive no explanation at all, just the answer. The first puzzle, for example, is not only quite difficult, but could frustrate readers because the solution given is not the only one that could be reached! The main problem, though, is the story is built around the puzzles, instead of vice-versa. Recommended only for true puzzle aficionados. Reviewer: Naomi Milliner
