Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth D. Schafer
Birds, both wild and domesticated, confound Hank in the fifty-sixth book in the "Hank the Cowdog" series. Narrating his woeful tale, Hank is disgusted by unpalatable Cheapo Brand dog food which frugal cowboy Loper pours in his feed pan and decides to boycott that offensive kibble. He watches Sally May fill the bird feeder with birdseed in her yard, a forbidden zone for Hank, and wonders why birds deserve tasty food and not him. Hank's long-time nemesis Pete the Barncat convinces him to indulge in the fancy birdseed. Sally May scolds Hank when she sees him accidentally knocking the bird feeder from its stand and slurping up seed. Disgraced Hank sniffs his kibble, contemplating how to appease Sally May, when the rooster J.T. Cluck approaches him with a problem: Elsa, a hen, heard coyotes howling about eating chickens. Afraid the coyotes plan to attack the chicken house, the rooster asks Hank to investigate. The coyotes boast about their intentions when Hank infiltrates their camp. Realizing he might win Sally May's forgiveness by saving her chickens, Hank suppresses his hunger for poultry and bravely confronts his wily foe Scraunch. Illustrations complement the text, portraying scruffy Hank, his supporting cast, and the barren Texas landscape where they roam. Humorous dialogue, songs ("Eating Doesn't Have to Be Fun"), and wordplay effectively convey Hank's dilemmas and bewilderment. Short chapters, steady action, heroic themes, and comical depictions of ranch culture and animals, tame and feral, might appeal to reluctant readers. Darrel and Sally Odgers's "Jack Russell: Dog Detective" series and "Wishbone" mysteries by various authors offer Hank's fans more canine adventures. Reviewer: Elizabeth D. Schafer
