Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Joel S Shuster, PharmD, BCPP (Temple University School of Pharmacy)
Description: This is an excellent, updated second edition of a 1999 book on ethics in pharmacy. Three major sections with a total of 16 chapters deal with the many ethical issues that pharmacists may face in pharmacy practice. Almost 100 different cases are presented and reviewed with informative discussions.
Purpose: This book is meant to give pharmacists a quick background in general ethics and, certainly, an understanding of the many areas of bioethics that involve pharmacists and pharmaceutical care. The authors have done an admirable job of collecting the many cases to illustrate the nitty-gritty of pharmacy ethics.
Audience: Both authors have worked in the field of pharmaceutical ethics for many years. They've published this updated edition for all pharmacy practitioners. This is a must-read for all pharmacists who actively work with patients and other healthcare personnel.
Features: The book covers all areas of pharmacy practice and includes outstanding chapters dealing with the ethical principles in pharmacy and specific cases dealing with scores of possible scenarios. Each case study is followed by superior commentary that illustrates various choices that pharmacists may have when dealing with specific situations. The detailed index points the reader to one or more specific cases for any question that a pharmacist may have about an ethical dilemma.
Assessment: This edition has been updated with two new chapters and many additional cases to keep it current with the changing landscape of healthcare in the United States. As a pharmacy school teacher of an elective course in pharmaceutical ethics, I highly recommend this book.
