About the Author

Jayna Bonfini PhD, LPC, NCC, MAC has significant research, teaching, and clinical experience with adolescents and young adults struggling with various mental health issues, trauma histories, and substance abuse problems. A Licensed Professional Counselor, Master Addiction Counselor, and a Nationally Certified Counselor, she has specific training in Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to offer an integrated approach that meets the needs of her clients.

Elizabeth Ventura PhD, LPC, NCCis a qualitative researcher, trauma specialist, and counselor educator. She serves on local panels in her area and is a consultant for school districts regarding the implementation of care for traumatized children and adolescents. Dr. Ventura is a Senior Core faculty member in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Department at Walden University and primarily specializes in teaching counseling techniques.

Description: This is the second edition of a book that links DSM-5 criteria with real-life examples of cases with a mental illness diagnosis. It guides readers through the assessment process, including clinical thinking and differential diagnosis, and outlines treatment planning for each situation as well as different clinical interventions that can be used in treating each case. The first edition was published in 2016.
Purpose: The book is meant as a companion for DSM-5 in teaching and learning the process of mental health diagnosis. Bringing real-life cases into the classroom is a worthy objective that this book meets with a diversity of cases that cover all the major DSM-5 diagnoses.
Audience: The audience is graduate level students in mental health fields such as counseling, marriage and family therapy, and social work. It is meant to accompany the study of DSM-5 in learning the assessment and diagnostic process.
