Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“A uniquely practical text that presents the diagnostic, pathogenic, prevention, therapeutic and public health aspects of clinical microbiology in the context of case based presentations. An essential resource for training the clinical microbiologist, pathology resident and infectious disease fellow.”

David W. Craft PhD, Medical Director of Microbiology, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Leopoldo Alberto Dobronski Jacome, MD (Creighton University Medical Center)
Description: The 74 patient cases in this book portray a broad array of human infections with a focus on the microbiological agents that cause them. What distinguishes this book, an update of the 2002 edition, is its review of key clinical concepts and pertinent laboratory methodology.
Purpose: Designed primarily as a review, the book's main objective is to provide a compilation of the fundamental, relevant elements of each topic and integrate basic science concepts with their practical application in clinical settings.
Audience: The simplicity of the explanations throughout the book reflects its main audience: students. However, each case presents concepts important to the knowledge base of internal medicine residents and infectious diseases fellows, making this a valuable pedagogic tool. The authors, from various U.S. academic medical centers, are specialists in clinical microbiology.
Features: The patient scenarios represent a broad range of infectious diseases, divided by organ system into six chapters with a final section on infections in diverse settings. This edition also contains a very basic glossary of terms and a review of pertinent laboratory diagnostic methods. However, the minimal utility of the index and the absence of descriptive titles for the chapters presenting the clinical cases make it difficult to select a topic, the book's greatest shortcoming.
Assessment: This book offers a collection of key concepts that are pertinent to every stage of medical training, thanks to its presentation centered on microorganisms, colorful design, and careful selection of illustrations.
