Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Casey wants Lightning, the horse that Miss Zelda is selling for $1500, more than anything else. She spends her whole summer working, but Miss Zelda has to sell Lightning now and Geronimo wants to buy the horse for his daughter. Casey is sure she will never see Lightning again. Then strange things start happening at Mrs. Lombardi's house across the street. Casey and her best friend, Mickey, find out that Mrs. Lombardi is putting on a carnival for the community. The big event will be a yo-yo contest with a prize of $1500. Casey is an expert at the yo-yo, but has not touched one since she froze up in front of the whole school last spring at the talent show. Casey is torn between her love for Lightning and her fear of being up front. To make matters worse, Casey realizes that Lightning's new owner will never really care about Lightning. After she and Mickey try a magic spell to cure stage fright, Casey decides to enter the contest. When it is all over, Casey did well but did not win the money. Then Geronimo sees the truth about his daughter and decides that Lightning should belong to Casey. This was a great book for horse lovers, as well as for those struggling with stage fright. Magic is also a major theme in this book and is the only explanation for some of the things that happen. This is part of the "Orca Young Readers" series. 2005, Orca Book Publishers, Ages 8 to 11.

Casey flattened herself against the side of the house. "Shhh!" she said. She beckoned to Mickey. He crept forward. "Look!" Casey said. Mickey craned his neck around Casey's shoulder and stared. A big striped tent filled Mrs. Lombardi's backyard. Casey and Mickey stared so hard at the tent they didn't even hear the footsteps. A shadow snaked over them and onto the grass. Hello, children," said a mysterious voice.
