Overview

Singer. Songwriter. With an unmistakable voice that resonates with millions, lyrics that speak volumes in the span of three minutes, and a career that lasted nearly five decades, Johnny Cash was peerless in his style and had a vast influence on country, folk, and rock music.

The legendary "Man in Black" (who originally wanted to be a gospel singer) wrote his first hit record for Sam Phillips at Sun Records in the 1950s...and in 2003 turned a Nine Inch Nails song into one of the most deeply moving music videos ever created. A man of uncommon grace and innate goodness, Johnny Cash plied his gifts, fought his demons, and lived a life that was his alone — enjoying one of the great love stories of the century with his wife, June, while somehow managing to leave a little of himself with people all over the world.

In Cash: An American Man, fans of his music are now given a unique and personal glimpse into his life through hundreds of photographs, private letters, handwritten lyrics, his final interview given just three weeks before his death, and other astonishing memorabilia — a one-of-a-kind collection fully authorized by the Johnny Cash Estate and created in cooperation with his friend, confidant, and lifelong fan, Bill Miller. Lavishly illustrated and designed by the award-winning team at Rare Air Media, Cash: An American Man is sure to be one of the most talked-about books of the year, and the ultimate tribute to one of the music's most enduring figures.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Two more Johnny Cash tribute books have surfaced. Adding to their series on recently deceased music icons, the editors of Rolling Stone have repackaged two interviews, articles by cofounder Ralph Gleason, excerpts from Cash's two autobiographies, tributes to Cash from other rock luminaries, and articles by well-known rock journalists Robert Hilburn and Steve Pond. They also produce some new material, including a substantive recap of Cash's career, articles about his Sun Records days and his 1990s comeback, an annotated discography, and a somewhat misplaced interview with producer Rick Rubin. They nestle this text among 150 intriguing black-and-white photos. Miller, who administers the official Cash web site, has published four-color photos of his extensive Cash memorabilia collection, much of it given to him by the Man in Black himself. He has some fascinating pictures, some of which exemplify Cash's penchant for collecting Roman coins and presidential letters. Other, less-compelling photos picture dozens of Johnny Cash's canceled checks and pages of handwritten lyrics. Super-fan Miller also includes a revealing last interview of Cash, conducted by MTV's Kurt Loder. Unlike the Rolling Stone tribute, which concentrates on Cash's musical career, offering a creditable survey, Miller's book provides insight into Cash's character and adds a human touch missing from many other music books. Though neither book will become a standard, both are interesting if not essential for music buffs.-Dave Szatmary, Univ. of Washington, Seattle Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

    Cash: An American Man

I don't think there's any better compliment on this book than the one by Johnny's own daughter, entertainer Rosanne Cash: 'Bill Miller's book is assembled with so much genuine respect and love that it feels like a family album. Even if no one else ever sees this book, I am delighted and grateful that it exists so that one day I may show it to my grandchildren.'

    Cash: An American Man

You can tell this book was written by a personal friend of Johnny Cash's. It's a heart warming ode from one friend to another; a poem to a friend, if you will. The conversations are recounted; the shared memories are recounted. Cash himself shares with we readers through his handwritten lyrics and manuscripts as well his his letters written to his children and his beloved wife June Carter. We also get to take a peek into Cash's own mail from several of his admirers ranging from the Rev. Billy Graham to Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon and Gene Autry. What makes this book especially compelling is that it contains Cash's very last interview, done with MTV's Kurt Loder. The interview was never published in its entirety until this book. The last song written by Cash is also shown in the book---in his own handwriting. In between the pages are hundreds of great candid photos (many never seen before) of Cash in his pajamas, Cash out shopping, Cash with his gradkids, Cash at home, Cash everywhere! For collectors of memorabilia, the book is a treasure trove. Rare records, posters, handbills, promotional items and ephemera galore gloriously illustrate Cash's illustrious career. If you are a Cash fan, your library would never be complete without Cash: An American man. If you're a casual fan, or someone who's a little bit more than curious about The Man In Black, you need this book to get to know Johnny---on a personal and professional level. Two thumbs up!!

    Perfection on paper

Johnny Cash sang of a 'Tear Stained Letter'. Bill Miller's new Project is a 'Tear Stained Book'. Written with the love and passion which joined two friends together on a magical journey. 'Cash An American Man' is more than an intimate look into the life of America's greatest treasure, it is the ' High School Annual' of Johnny's life. This book shows the mystical, spiritual, & Enigmatic immortality of Johnny Cash. Mr. Miller has given Johnny's family as well as the world a 'backstage' view into the soul of a powerful man.

    Cash: An American Man

I've never seen a book before which makes you feel like you just spent a day getting to know a superstar. This book is so personal, so intimate that you can't help but feel you know Johnny Cash when you're done with it. Full of beautiful photographs, Johnny Cash's own handwritten poems, stories, songs and art, it's a feast for the eyes and heart. If you can only get one Johnny Cash book, this is it!!!

    LIKE NOTHING I'VE EVER SEEN

This book is nothing short of amazing. I've followed Johnny Cash's music and career for over 25 years and in this book I've learned things I didn't know. It's really cool to see how he wrote a song in his own hand, seeing the changes, etc., and how the final song actually turns out. This book is so personal, I almost feel like I'm peeking in on Cash's intimate life. The personal letters he wrote to his kids, the personal letters written to him by Presidents and celebrities really give new insight into his amazing persona. The poem he wrote about his wife of three decades, June Carter, after she died brought tears to my eyes. The last song he ever wrote tore me up. This book is so different from any other book and I have them all. When I got done going through it, I was emotionally drained...in a good way. I've gone through the book cover to cover a number of times and I always find something new and amazing. The author did a great job and appears to have been a very close friend of the Cash's. Beautiful photos, easy to read and a treasure for any casual or hard core Cash fan, I recommend this book to all.

    Cash: An American Man

Johnny Cash was and will always be the greatest of them all. Name another singer who had the influence and respect from so many wide and varied fans and fellow musicians? Give up? That's because he is so unique. From Snoop to Dylan, Petty, Springsteen, etc., Cash was worshipped by all. This book is really cool. It is like a museum of The Man In Black. It really lets me feel like I'm taking a peek into his life and like he's the one giving me the peek. Although it was written by a friend of his, this book feels like Johnny Cash wrote it. He speaks to you through his own hand-written songs and writings. The pictures show a Johnny Cash many of us have not seen before. It also features the last song Johnny Cash ever wrote, in his shaky handwriting shortly before he left the world. There are pictures of his air force uniform, his guitar where he has written the words to 'I Walk The Line', drawings and painting made by him (including an amazing drawing he did of the Shroud of Turin) and so much cool, cool stuff! I love this book and every time I look at it I find something new. It is different from other Cash books...and that's what I like about it.
