Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Pickering is an experienced author and editor of general reference whose works range from The Dictionary of Superstitions to Cassell's Sports Quotes. With this compendium of concise, memorable, and thought-provoking sayings, he has revised and expanded his original 1997 edition from 3000-plus to 5000 proverbs drawn from many cultures and time periods. The alphabetically arranged entries list the first significant keyword in boldface, followed by the proverbs, also in boldface, with their meaning, country of origin, date of first appearance, subsequent usage, and cross references. New to this edition is a thematic index, allowing the reader to locate specific proverbs by subject. Similar to such works as The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs (1998. 3d ed.), though with more entries, but still far less comprehensive than Burton Stevenson's now out-of-print Macmillan Book of Proverbs, Maxims, and Famous Phrases (1987), this source offers the general reader an abundance of succinct, accessible, informative, and authoritative data that are uniquely browsable. Recommended for language collections. Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
