Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elisabeth Greenberg
This re-invented story of Little Red Riding Hood features young middle schooler Cassie Cloak in a red raincoat facing off with a hungry, rather mean, older middle schooler named Caleb Woolf. Woolf’s character as a bully appears first in a basketball game with friends (of a sort), and when he appears next to Cassie, who is carrying a deli dinner in the rain to Grandma, menace is in the air. The first part of the book is fun to read, but when Grandma is tied up in the bathroom and Cassie is flat on the floor after being slammed by a door, “fun” goes out the window. Caleb loses most of the reader’s sympathy, despite his desperate physical hunger and his sad home life. However, as Cassie and Grandma cook up a near-death revenge in order to “persuade” Caleb to confess his wicked behavior, the reader may lose sympathy with Cassie as well. This easy read will be sure to grip readers’ interest, but what will they take away from it? The visceral emotions of the original folktale come through in this modern story, and readers will have to decide for themselves if revenge is a kind of justice or not. Teachers might find that this book leads to some interesting discussion of values, particularly in urban schools. Reviewer: Elisabeth Greenberg AGERANGE: Ages 10 to 14.
