Overview

A critic once described Maria Callas's voice as "part-oboe, part-clarinet." One hears similar qualities in Angela Gheorghiu's instrument, although the tone is darker and slightly less edgy. Perhaps part-clarinet, part-viola is a more fitting characterization. In any case, Gheorghiu's soprano is distinctively beautiful and conveys an emotional intensity that is particularly affecting. One senses that she is deep within her character as she sings. In "Regnava nel silenzio" from Donizetti's Lucia, for example, she evokes the haunted atmosphere of her narrative quite effectively, with the virtuoso passages used purely as expressive gestures. The program focuses primarily on lyrical arias, and it is to Gheorghiu's credit that the pace never seems to drag. "Casta diva" from Bellini's Norma, the archetypal bel canto aria, has an unusual feeling of underlying urgency, produced not through haste but fervent tone and spontaneity of phrasing. She is capable of many moods, however, and her interpretation of "Una voce poco fa" from Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia is full of cunning and wit. Those who think the age of the diva is gone should pay close attention to Angela Gheorghiu. She has the voice, imagination, and temperament to be an intensely bright star.

Editorial Reviews

Gramophone - John Steane
Once again we have to count our blessings. As with the recent recital by Karita Mattila, I feel we are a lucky generation, in this respect at least, that here we have sopranos with such purity of tone, evenness of production and scrupulous musicianship... The opening "Cast diva" fulfils all the promise of melodic loveliness held out by the flute in its dreamy introduction, but as soon as the voice enters, so does the human being... In this and the other Bellini solos, Gheorghiu finds the right balance between purity of line and the inflections needful for expression.
BBC Music Magazine
Angela Gheorghiu's essentially lyrical soprano idealy suits this fragile, shimmering [music] and she has all the technique for when it boils over into a frenzy of coloratura madness... Evelino Pido coaxes a sensitive and idiomatic accompaniment from the LSO in this stunning disc. Clive Portbury
