Steinn si Solrun se reintalnesc la un vechi hotel din fiordurile Norvegiei si rememoreaza trecutul si vina de care nu s-au eliberat inca. Fiind fiecare casatorit si avand propriii copii, cei doi inlocuiesc intensitatea trairilor de altadata cu aprinse discutii purtate prin e-mailuri despre sensurile vietii si despre fortele care guverneaza realitatea din jur. Complice cu autorul care orchestreaza jocurile narative, cititorul este martorul schimburilor tensionate de idei intre agnosticul Steinn si mistica Solrun. Daca cei doi protagonisti decid ca fiecare e-mail sa fie sters imediat ce e parcurs, cititorul are privilegiul de a avea sub ochi conversatiile care cauta raspunsuri la intrebarile ce domina romanului lui Gaarder: este viata dupa moarte? Exista coincidente sau totul este planul bine pus la punct al unei instante superioare, fie ea divine sau explicabile stiintific? Intr-o maniera devenita deja marca inregistrata Jostein Gaarder, romanul ce poarta titlul unui tablou al lui Rene Magritte pastreaza ceva din misterul suprarealist si imbina observatiile filosofice cu o intriga plina de suspans si o emotionanta poveste de dragoste care rezista timpului. Ce rezulta - un roman care desfata intelectual si estetic.
