In a cold basement in some place of Norway, Emilie, a nine year-old girl, is locked up. She ignores where she is and the reason of her confinement. Neither she knows who is the man that regularly offers her food and drink; however, her instincts tell her to behave well with him. The days go on and the uneasiness starts taking possession of the country. Yngvar Stubo, the commissary of the Norwegian Criminology Service in charge of the case, decides to request the help of psychologist Inger Johanne Vik, a former FBI profiler.
