Overview

In September 2003, pop/adult contemporary group Casting Crowns released their self-titled debut. After hearing one of their independent projects, Sawyer Brown's Mark Miller signed the band -- composed of members Mark Hall (lead vocals), Chris Huffman (bass), Melodee DeVevo (violin/vocals), Juan DeVevo (guitars/vocals), Andy Williams (drums), Megan Garrett (keys/vocals), and Hector Cervantes (guitars/vocals) -- to the label he founded, Beach Street Records. The album is comparable to releases by CCM veteran Steven Curtis Chapman, Caedmon's Call, and Phillips, Craig & Dean. The project, produced by Miller and Chapman, features ten tracks aimed at encouraging and challenging the body of Christ. "If We Are the Body" examines the inner circles within churches that can leave newcomers feeling unwelcome, while "Voice of Truth" speaks of obeying God despite fear. Additional songs include "Who Am I" and "What If His People Prayed." [The DualDisc version includes the entire album in 5.1 Surround and PCM stereo, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, a music video, and one live concert performance.] ~ Ashleigh Kittle Slater

I love this CD still to this day. I've had it since about 5 and a half years ago (or maybe longer) and this is a great CD. I love the uplifting music that are on the Casting Crowns CDs and highly suggest all their CDs:)

I originally was drawn to this CD by the song "If We are the Body". All the songs on this CD are thoughtful and inspirational. My children and I all enjoyed it. Casting Crowns may have started as a youth ministry but they have a message for the enitre church. No matter your age...check them out!

THis is one of the best cd.s I own. It is an inspiration to me and keeps me going. The lyrics have depth and make me think. To everyone out there, listen to this and the get right with God. Keep on praying for those who don't know him, prayer works.

I think this is one of the best groups playing Contemporary Christian now. They can appeal to anyone in any age category.

Everyone, young and old, should hear the message in these lyrics. What if His People Prayed, If We Are the Body, and American Dream are the best.

A gripe I have with many Christian bands is that they don't seem to be able to wrap up meaningful lyrics, strong music, passion and personality in one consistent package. When I first heard "If We Are the Body" from this album, I was very impressed. Would the rest of the album consist of one or two more great songs and then seven or eight duds? Nope. While the first six songs and the last four songs are dramatically different in theme and tone, all are extremely well-written, insightful and powerful. Mark Hall has some of the sharpest lyrics going, exploring the power of prayer (and the absence of prayer), our responsibilities as the body of Christ, the power of faith, the power of God's grace, the futility of working for earthly treasures and the importance of our personal witness. And that's just the first six songs. We are then thrown into four praise songs, which slightly upset the flow, but perhaps bring a much needed lift after such a deep and introspective start. While the final song, Your Love Is Extravagant, is a nice finish, to me it seems out of place as the only song without Mark Hall's contribution to lyrics and music. But hey, this is an excellent album, minor quirks and all. Larry Hehn, author of Get the Prize: Nine Keys for a Life of Victory

Who am I is one of the greatest songs. It has a very good message in it.

This is a terrific CD. I am sick and tired of Christians who can't sing thinking, that once they are saved, they suddenly have the God-given talent to sing! I am also tired of buying a CD and hearing the same old songs (re-makes) that I have on a half dozen other CD's. These guys (and gals) were born with talent and their CD is full of fresh music and lyrics. I thought the last song was out of place. It just didn't "fit" with the rest of the songs. Also, I really wish Mark Hall would free the other musicians to show their talents in the form of guitar solos. After all, their talent is just as God-given as his. Why not show it to us without him singing over it?

This is one of those CDs you will definitely find yourself singing along to. All the songs have the ability to get you singing, with clean lyrics. Family approved, this is one CD that everyone in the family will love to listen to. If you like Contemporary Christian music you will like this CD very much. Great for letting people know about the message of Christ and opening your eyes to what the message of Christ is about. Musically, there is a lot of talent, and the message comes across. The songs will touch you spiritually, the lyrics are original in that they make you think about life. Overall, an enjoyable CD to add to your collection. Fans of Michael W. Smith will love this CD.
If you pay attention to the lyrics you may find that it is more than just a catchy tune.
The main reason for 4/5 stars: once you hear one song, you can guess how the next one will sound. Easy on the ears, but follows the same formula.
