Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The "Tower" series is a reissue of an interesting experiment between Lucasfilms and the Australian fantasy/futurist writer Garth Nix. Unlike the results of many "packaged" book projects, Nix is a good enough craftsman to retain his voice throughout the sprawling adventures of the two fourteen-year-olds questing on behalf of their separate worlds. Book two of this seven-part epic finds Milla the warrior-girl, Icecarl, and Tal of the Chosen recovering from their wounds on a sleigh nearing the Ruin Ship—the spiritual home of the Icecarls who live in the frigid world of darkness outside the walls of Tal's light-filled Castle. During an audience with a Mother Crone, Milla is ordered to return with Tal to the Castle in search of a sunstone for her clan. Tal finds a route back into the Castle, but his homecoming is not what he expected. Rather than locating his missing brother and sister and dealing with his sick mother, he finds himself persona non grata and must make his escape to the spirit world of Aenir in search of help in the form of a missing Codex. Naturally, Milla must join him . . . . The two kids brawl and bicker nonstop like siblings. Will they learn to trust each other for the mutual good? Will Tal's eccentric Great Uncle Ebbitt protect the bodies they abandon for their trip to Aenir? Why is the wicked Chosen Sushin out for Tal's hide? Tune in to Book three for possible answers. Castle book 2

The second book continues with Tal and Milla as they travel back to Tal's home and find that everything has changed thus leading Tal to a man he never trusted since the day they've met and with Milla stumbling in the room called Nightmare and what awaits her beyond.

I wish there were more stars to give this book.

This is the best book I have read in a long long time. The last book that was really good was sabriel by the same author.

    Not Nix's Best

One of the elements of writing in this genre that Nix is particularly gifted at is creating original fantasies and worlds. This series is no exception. However, in comparison to some of his other works, especially The Abhorsen Trilogy, the exploration of this world and the characters within is weak at best. The story is interesting because Nix presents the audience with a new mythology, but he rushes through the plot, circumnavigating what could be some really amazing explorations of the world he's created. As a result, it's more difficult to imagine this parallel universe and its characters and creatures, and it doesn't draw the reader in nearly as much as it could.
This series breaks one large story into several books, and since each of these is easily around the high 100s and low 200s in page length, Nix could have spent more time giving description, metaphors, and poetic/aesthetic language to flush this world out. This would make everything significantly more engaging for the readers, and ultimately, foster growth and interest in the books, the fantasy, the world, and the characters therein. Ultimately, there's just nothing to bite into. -Lindsey Miller, www.lindseyslibrary.com

    absolutley fantastic

This book is a wonderful suspense, magic, action, comedy and drama all smashed together. I think that it is much better than all the really popular titles like harry potter and all that. Read it if you enjoy magic and mystery.

    This Book Rocks!

The Tower was a well written book and was very, how should I put it, suspense hanging. I would recommend this book if you really like some mystery, fiction(duh), and suspense. My friends have also read this book, and have enjoyed it too. So, read this book(if you want)

    Kicks Potter's @$$!

This book is absolutely awesome! Garth Nix combines fantasy & mystery into one action and suspensed packed book. The book just makes you read on beacause you want to find out what happens next. You should REALLY get this book, but also get book 1, 'The Fall' if you want a better uderstanding of 'The Castle'

THIS BOOK IS BETTER THAN POTTER!!!!!!!!

This book is the greatest book i have ever read. It keeps you in suspense. For example: Milla and Tal have to jump across a gorge and milla does it like 10 words into the chapter. But tal cant do it. it takes like 3 chapters for him to cross, total suspense. A GREAT BOOK!!
