Children's Literature - Nancy PartridgeThis is a history book with flair, filled with photographs, intricate drawings, and artwork from the Middle Ages. Describing everyday medieval castle life, the book is organized into chapters and covers a lot of information. Each two-page spread begins with a narrative scene, written in the present tense, which brings the reader right into the topic in a lively way. It then goes on to explain many fascinating details. There are paintings and photographs of objects from the era, poetry, and sidebars of extra tidbits such as actual historic journal entries, all of which give an authentic flavor to the text. There are also many photographs of real castles as they look today. While the timeline has some irrelevant facts, there's a pretty good glossary, references section, and index in the back of the book, making this a useful contribution to a social science curriculum. It is part of the series, The Age of Castles.
