Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy McMillan
The Alden children are off with their grandfather to help fix up an old castle and turn it into a museum. But things start out roughly when they are nearly run off the road on their way there. Next they meet the gruff and mysterious caretaker Mr. Tooner and two other assistants who seem to sneak around and have more secrets than they should. The castle also plays host to mysterious music, lights in its abandoned towers, secret passageways, and a missing violin. Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny are up to the challenge though, and do what they do best...solve the mystery! The illustrations are reminiscent of older comics (ala Prince Valiant) giving the books a timeless sort of quality, though they do not jump out and grab the reader like so many of the more modern, cartoonlike illustrations do. The story is rather simplistic with the mystery being resolved neatly and easily by the children, keeping with the charms of the original chapter books. This is the twelfth book in the "Boxcar Children Graphic Novels" series. Reviewer: Amy McMillan
