Take a tour of the most beautiful and historically significant castles ever built through the pages of this stunning book. Castle expert Robin S. Oggins discusses the history and evolution of the castle from its modest beginnings through the war-torn Middle Ages to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. From castles of grandeur and castles of romance to dark and forbidding fortresses and fascinating castle ruins, this book celebrates this intriguing structure in its many forms. Visit the major castles of Europe and those the Crusaders built in the Middle East, including Warwick Castle in England; the Marksburg Castle in Germany; the Castle Stalker in the Scottish Highlands; Kalmar Castle in Sweden; the castles of Rhodes, Lebanon, and Syria; and more. The book ends with a discussion of palaces, fortified towns, and modern castles, including Avignon in France; the Kremlin in Moscow; the Hearst Castle in California; and Canada's Casa Loma, among others. Informative, lively text and beautiful color photographs together provide an exciting look at these much-romanticized architectural wonders.

This book was quite enjoyable to read. It has pictures that have short stories to explain them. In the stories the castles are explained by which present country they were built in. These castles which are from the medevil times have a difference in architecture ranging from which time period the castles were built. I liked this book because of the history involved and some of the famous castles they show. I also like the architecture some of the castles have in them. Imagine what the workers had to go through to build these outstanding structures without powered engines or tools. It is cool to see the difference in the architectural styles that range from different counties of the time. I truly recommend that you read this great book to learn about history of the Middle Ages.
