Overview

A first experience with snow

Cat and Mouse have gone out to play together in the green meadow every day since they became friends. Then one morning they find that the green meadow is gone! The two friends set off in search of it, but everywhere they look the ground is white -- covered with snow-- and soon they are too! Cat and Mouse quickly discover that this white world has new kinds of fun to offer, and that the green meadow hasnt disappeared at all -- it's just become the white meadow for a while. In the fourth of his beguiling Cat and Mouse books, Tomek Bogacki's simple text and delightful pictures once again capture the innocence of being a child in the ever-changing natural world, in which each new day brings both surprises and pleasures.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Gisela Jernigan
When the cat and mouse friends go out one morning to play in their green meadow, they are bewildered by the cold white stuff covering everything, including their meadow. While trying to climb a hill to find out what happened to the meadow, they also discover what fun they can have playing in the snow. Soft, child-like paintings in shades of blue, white and brown join with a brief, simple text celebrating the joys of winter and friendship in a way that should appeal to young children.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1 Cat and Mouse are ready for their usual play date but find that, overnight, snow has turned their familiar green meadow into a different world. While climbing a hill in search of the missing field, "The ground slipped away and down, down, down they slid." The animals' brothers and sisters are surprised to encounter "two strange white creatures" with frozen whiskers and large, dark eyes peering out. Soft brush strokes lend texture and depth to the inviting illustrations. As in Bogacki's previous "Cat and Mouse" books (Farrar), the minimalist text expresses the joy of new discoveries and experiences. Young listeners will delight in solving the mystery of the disappearing meadow. An enjoyable story that would work well in a winter storytime.
