Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Daisy's cat food is missing, and it's up to the Pet Club to solve the mystery. The members of the Pet Club, two boys, two girls, a pet rat, a dog, a cat, and a fish are identified with their pictures and names on the first two pages. The story evolves using only one or two sentences per page. Kayla notices that her cat Daisy always acts hungry and tries to eat Kayla's food. Kayla also sees prints on the floor around the cat door. At school, she tells her friends in the Pet Club all about it. On her way home from school, Kayla sees a sign about a missing raccoon. The club members meet and decide to use a squirrel cage to attempt to catch the thief. They catch the raccoon and then share the cat's food with the raccoon one more time before they take him back to the owners. This text in the "Pet Club" series is on level two of this reading program. This level is for children who can read with help and has longer sentences, higher vocabulary, and easy dialogue in comparison with the previous level. A page for parents and caregivers contains suggestions of ways to work with children to help them enjoy the story and learn to read such as discussing each illustration to promote comprehension. The illustrations are simple and fun. It's a cute little story using a surprising small number of words. Children should enjoy learning to read as they find the solution to the mystery with the members of the Pet Club. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
