Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This title from the "I am Your Pet" series is delightful. Written in the first person from the viewpoint of a cat, it is an informative and enjoyable read. The attraction begins with the cover, a close up photo of a cat's eyes that is virtually irresistible. The text covers a brief history of cats and information on choosing a healthy and happy pet cat, as well as detailed information about cat care. Photographs of different cats engaged in various activities cover the majority of the space on the pages. The text is presented in short paragraphs around the photos. The layout is very easy to read and appealing to the eye. A very detailed table of contents and index are both provided, as well as a glossary and lists providing additional reading and web sites. This is a wonderful title and a must have for all children's libraries. 2004, Gareth Stevens, Ages 5 to 10.

Gr 2-4-Written with a humorous flair, each of these titles presents pet-care basics. Information includes lifestyle in both wild and domestic settings, how to select the right animal, diet, environment, behavioral characteristics, relationships with humans and other animals, exercise needs, health, and reproduction. Colorful paw prints frame each topical spread, and each one includes several paragraphs of text and full-color photos. Dialogue bubbles express various thoughts of the featured animal. In Cat, for example, a feline eating from his food dish is thinking, "Mmmm- much better than school lunches." Colorful fact boxes encourage responsible pet ownership ("Look out! Do not let your cat have kittens unless you know you can find a good home for all of them. The vet can give male and female cats an operation so that they cannot have kittens"). This is refreshing compared to the numerous pet-care books that depict adorable kittens or puppies without addressing the more serious issues. Fun, spirited books.-Cathie Bashaw Morton, Somers Library, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
