The Cat of Bubastes by G.A Henty (1889) is one of the best Egyptian books that are based on fiction. Even though this book is fiction, it can be used as a supplemental textbook because the details about Egyptian culture and belief system are extremely accurate. (The Cat of Bubastes is a more advanced book, so it might be too difficult for some ages.) The main story line follows five main characters as they try to escape the brutalities of the Egyptians' way of belief. Two of them are captured slaves, two are wealthy Egyptians, and one is a young Israelite girl. Together they endeavor to escape Egypt. This book challenges the belief that if everyone is doing it, it must be right. Through out the story, the main characters come to realize that what society dictates isn't always correct. I really like this because it helps encourage finding things out for yourself, and making sure that what you're doing is right. The element that sets this book apart from other books is the realistic and accurate depiction of the characters. Each of the main characters has a strong honest personality that drives their actions and decisions. G.A. Henty portrays characters in such a way that the reader can really understand their emotions as they struggle for freedom. If you like Egyptian history or historical fiction, this is definitely one of the best books out there. It will take you right into the middle of one of the most fascinating times in history.

This book is a tale in the times of Ancient Egypt. It tells of a young boy who is a captive of the Egyptians after a war with his country. The Cat of Bubastes has a lot of excitement, action, and suspense. If your are a lover of stories of the acient Egyptians, this is the book for you!

Like Dickens and other authors of his era, Henty does not write fluff. His stories are to be read leisurely and savored. By putting the historical facts in the setting of the life of a young person, he makes ancient history alive and interesting. His vivid descriptions make you feel as though you are in a palace, desert or caravan. You live their emotions. By making history so personal, he makes it memorable.

I read this book for possible inclusion in historically integrated school curricula, and it barely made the grade. It has an imaginative plot but it is written in a heavy style with little depth to the characters, and therefore not much to keep a child interested. It almost takes an adult to persevere to the (very predictable) end. Definitely not recommended for below 7th grade.

This book is great especially if you like Ancient Egypt or are doing a project. It has a great story line. One warning. The characters talk a little to much. Besides that it is a spectacular book.

I read this book to help me in history. I was learning about the ancient Egyptians at the time. Nothing helps you visualize the ancient times like Henty does. A WONDERFUL book! He is also very historically accurate.
