Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Heave ho and set sail with Cat, who will serve up mystery and suspense to readers who like exciting adventures.” —School Library Journal

“The wit, action, and swashbuckling action never stall in this fourth installment in the Cat Royal Adventures series.” —Booklist

VOYA - Debbie Wenk
Cat and three of her friends find themselves serving in His Majesty's Navy after being beaten, captured, and dragged aboard the HMS Courageous. When Cat comes to, the ship's purser explains that she is to dress as a boy and be his cabin boy for the voyage. He threatens serious harm to her friends if she does not obey him. He reveals that he is following orders from someone else—but who? Cat is tormented throughout the voyage and escapes once the ship puts in for repairs near the American coast. She finds herself taken in by a tribe of Creek who then adopt her. It is not long before she is betrothed to a young warrior. When two white journalists enter the Creek camp, Cat tries to figure a way to escape and somehow make her way to Philadelphia where she has friends who can help her. This fourth installment in the Cat Royal Adventures is a well-paced, engaging story. References to earlier books could either annoy or pique the interest of readers new to the series, but the story stands well on its own. Cat's friends—Frank, Syd, and Pedro—are not well developed, but readers familiar with the series will know them from the earlier books. Cat herself is a plucky character who will draw in young teen readers with her mix of despair and determination. Reviewer: Debbie Wenk
School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Golding sweeps readers up into a startling saga beginning when a bored Cat is a guest at the Duke's estate in London, but quickly taking her to the high seas. Kidnapped, she and her pals find themselves tossed aboard a boat, setting sail with the Royal British Navy for America. All the while, she must determine who is responsible for her situation, attempting to keep her friends safe, and keeping trouble at arm's length. Cat speaks to readers in asides, enabling them to be privy to her thoughts, fears, and concerns. This whirlwind adventure is action-packed. Readers interested in this episode in Cat's life might do well to become familiar with her earlier travails, but the story can stand alone as Golding often tosses in a bit of information about Cat's former life. Danger and new cultures await the protagonist, who finds herself in North America, betrothed to a Creek Indian. Heave ho and set sail with Cat, who will serve up mystery and suspense to readers who like exciting adventures.—Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA
Kirkus Reviews
The fourth installment of this series is a little too long, the adventures a little too forced and Cat falls a little too easily into and out of scrapes. In December 1791, Cat's in Bath with her noble friend Frank's family and their collection of pals from Drury Lane. She's bored, but not for long, as the lot of them are press-ganged into the Navy on a ship with a mad captain and a vicious purser. Cat takes to male clothing again, is forced to goad her dear friend Syd into actually hitting her to preserve her disguise (a discomfiting scene), escapes on a Georgia island where she is adopted by the Creek Indians, flees into the hands of those who will take her to Frank's sister and spouse in Philadelphia-and so on. And on. Cat's always able to do whatever needs to be done. She's an impossibly talented tall-tale heroine, good at everything-except choosing among the bevy of boys who adore her. The once-fresh Cat's getting a bit stale. (Historical fiction. 10-14)

    Fantastic!

Just the right amount of history and adventure put into a thrilling series. Recomend for young adult readers. This series may appear to be for the pre-teen audience but as a 15 and now 17 year old reader i find that i only seem to love the books more for the likable heroine with great friends and the great plot twists and settings that span continents.

    OMGOSH amazing

omg this book was amazing. I was dissapointed by Den of theives, but this book totally made up for it. I was captured right away, and Cat came back cooler than ever before. When I read that frank wa overun by girls, I was like no way! Frank doesn't deserve those dirstbags. But then inoring Cat was the last straw, but when he walked in on Cat and Billy i was like "o Frank just got SERVED! I was lauighing real hard then. I thought it was terrible of him to go on ignoring Cat and be mad at her because it was basically his fault. Then I was glad the Pedro was introduced, but again i felt like he was missing from the story in some parts. I am so happy that there was some romance between Syd and our Cat! Hehehe the fight was funny between them but i am glad that Syd didn't want to hit her. That was my favorite part!!!! I can't go on spilling secrets, so i thought this book was amazing but you have to read to find out what happens next!

    The Apprentices' Den

Similar to the warriors den, brambles and dead bracken have been dragged to form a kind of den. This one is smaller, however, and slightly lopsided at the top. Beside this den is a small treestump; this is a place where moss grows plentifully, and inside camp. The apprentices shall sleep here, and, if that is their duty, they will take fresh moss to the dens and preform one of the duties that no apprentice has ever wanted to do—clean the elder's den.
