Mercy is a town when everyone knows everyone’s business. How is that Jillian didn’t know her friend Tom had a brother? Jillian returns home after attending craft fairs and cat shows selling her beautiful kitty quilts to find Tom missing and a man claiming to be Tom’s brother looking mighty comfortable in Tom’s house. She also finds Tom’s diabetic cat has gotten out of the house and this stranger has made no effort at all to look for him. Then Tom’s car is found wrecked with a dead man, thankfully not Tom, inside. Where the heck is Tom and what is going on in Mercy? Jillian with the help of her feline friends is going to find out and find out fast before someone else ends up dead! Dollycas’s Thoughts Each story is better than the last. This is definitely the best of the series so far!! We get to delve into Tom’s past and it is jam packed with secrets that keep us on our paws until the very last page. I don’t want to give too much away but I will say there are several surprises. Lydia still thinks Jillian is standing in the way of her and Tom living happily ever after. Merlot, Syrah and Chablis meet a new friend and there are some new characters that you have to read to believe. There are parts will have you laughing out loud, parts that will have you shaking in your shoes, and parts that may make you shed a tear or two. Sweeney has written a complex mystery and the dialogue between the characters was some of the best I have ever read. Leann also always includes some cat facts and trivia woven into her stories and this time she enlightens us on feline diabetes and that plastic bowls can be toxic to our furry friends. I changed my pets water bowls the minute I read about it in the book. I am not going to pussyfoot around, this book is fabulous, I loved it and you will too!

The Cat, the Wife and the Weapon is engaging, scary, funny, and serious in turns, and there were a lot of twists and turns. The most serious aspects deal with family relationships, and the effects of following the letter of the law has on the lives of children without a blood relative who can care for them. It's a very satisfying read that touches on serious issues. The issues are more serious because Leann breathes life into her characters so that you care for and about them. The cover is awfully cute, too!.

Upon returning from her travels, Jillian learns that Tom is missing and when she finds a stranger in his home and his diabetic cat has disappeared, Jillian’s concern springs her into action. She finds Tom bruised and learns that Tom’s stepson has run away from home. When the boy’s stepfather is found murdered, Jillian knows that neither Tom nor Finn is capable of this crime, especially when evidence points to Finn. This was an emotionally filled story that captivated me and tugged at my heartstrings in this well-crafted whodunit. The tension-filled mystery kept me turning the pages, as I had to know what happens next. The characters were superb, the plot well defined and the dialogue powerfully moving. This is the best one yet in this wonderfully fantastic and charming series.

After a successful trip selling her crafted quilts, Jillian Hart was looking forward to reuniting back in South Carolina with Tom Stewart, a security expert and the man who has come to mean the most in her life. Unable to reach him by phone, she is highly disturbed when she drives to his home and discovers not Tom but a man claiming to be his brother. This is surprising not only because Tom had not mentioned that his brother was visiting but mostly because Tom had never mentioned that he even had a brother. Just as upsetting is how the uncomfortably flirty Bob callously allowed Tom’s diabetic cat to escape, leading to its near death. After leaving to rescue the helpless feline Jillian soon discovers that Tom has hidden from her a plethora of family secrets, including a former wife, his former police partner who betrayed both the badge and Tom's marriage, and a stepston who ran away to find solace with him. When the brutal ex-con ex-cop who married Tom's ex-wife turns up dead in Tom's car, the police focus on the two most obvious suspects who hated the man. Considering the duplicity and betrayal between humans who are supposed to love one another, it's no surprise that Jillian finds solace and comfort with her three beloved cats. They do not solve crimes, they don't provide clues, and their whiskers do not allow them to communicate with people, but they do permit Jillian to lower her protectiveness over her emotions and be vulnerable to love. What I enjoy about the books by Sweeney is how she fully develops her characters and prevents them from being chariactures. There are both good cops who are friends and cops who look for the easy answers. The reader is never sure if Tom's ex-wife is a victim or a manipulator, the stepson is more than a self-involved whiny teen, and Tom's mother is a hippie who truly wants the best for her family. More importantly, Jillian has become an extremely likable, continually growing woman who, though a good polite Southern woman, is never a doormat. When Tom's mother Karen leaves Jillian to better know his former wife, Jillian accepts about ten minutes of polite condenscion before shooting out the door. Full of humor, engaging characters, and a stellar plot, this is an extremely strong series that should never be catagorized as being either too cute or too catty. It's just too good. - Cindy Chow

“When quilter Jillian Hart returns to her lake house in Mercy, South Carolina, she discovered her friend, Tom, is missing-and his estranged half-brother has moved into Tom's house. Jillian doesn't trust the guy, especially since he allowed Tom's diabetic cat to escape. When police officers find Tom's wrecked car with a dead stranger inside, Jillian is determined to find out what happened to Tom-before someone else turns up dead.” This is the first in this series that I didn’t think that much of….there was way too many complications, details (and a lot had nothing to with the story and/or the mystery) ….all the pets were cute but just too many. All the characters were hard to keep track of just making the story not really that believable!

This is the 4th book in the Cats In Trouble mystery series. Jillian finally learns about Tom's past, and winds up helping Finn (Tom's Stepson). I enjoyed this book, thought it was better than the previous ones.
