Meet the Author

Lilian Jackson Braun
Lilian Jackson Braun
For nearly four decades, cat lover Lilian Jackson Braun has been turning out mysteries in her The Cat Who...series, starring multifaceted sleuth Jim Qwilleran and his two helpful cats, Koko and Yum Yum. Wryly but tamely written, Braun's books prove that quaintness and crime need not be mutually exclusive.

Biography

The history of Lilian Jackson Braun is perhaps as exciting and mysterious as her novels. Between 1966 and 1968, she published three novels to critical acclaim: The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern and The Cat Who Turned On and Off. In 1966, The New York Times labeled Braun, "the new detective of the year." Then, for reasons unknown, the rising mystery author disappeared from the publishing scene.

It wasn't until 1986 that the Berkley Publishing Group reintroduced Braun to the public with the publication of an original paperback, The Cat Who Saw Red. Within two years, Berkeley released four new novels in paperback and reprinted the three mysteries from the sixties. G.P. Putnam's Sons has since published seventeen Cat Who... novels, among them The Cat Who Went Up The Creek, The Cat Who Smelled a Rat, The Cat Who Robbed The Bank, The Cat Who Saw Stars, The Cat Who Tailed a Thief, The Cat Who Blew the Whistle, The Cat Who Said Cheese, The Cat Who Came to Breakfast, The Cat Who Went Into The Closet, The Cat Who Wasn't There, The Cat Who Moved The Mountain, The Cat Who Knew a Cardinal, The Cat Who Lived High, The Cat who Talked to Ghosts, The Cat Who Went Underground, The Cat Who Sniffed Glue, The Cat Who Saw Stars, and The Cat Who Sang For the Birds.

Even though Braun claims that her cats have never done anything extraordinary, her fictional cats, Koko and Yum Yum, solve crimes and delight fans in book after book. Braun says the reason for her success is that "people are simply tired of all the blood. I write what is called the classic mystery." She says that while "not all mystery fans like cats, all cat-fanciers seem to like mysteries. That makes for a large audience, since 26% of all American households own 53.9 million cats between them."

Braun was the "Good Living" editor of The Detroit Free Press for 29 years.

She cheered, though as to why, she didn't know for sure. She was happy and that was all that mattered to her. She watched Lilywolf jumped down and ran to greet her happily. ~Rose &hearts~ PS Velvet, I will too if you need a fourth rper. ^_^ maybe I can be more rowdy as a kit than just as Rose, lol. And Lily, odfee accepted about the warrior name, I just haven't figured out how to say so in rp with Rosie just yet! Yet!

    Lilywolf to Horseclan

Lilywolf gathers to hear Velvetstar's announcement. She purrs and yowls her kits' names. "Larkfrost, Rainsplash, Cougartooth!" The tabby feels proud of them. They were warriors at last. But a painful memory flashes through her mind as all her memories had been doing lately. A cream tom with green eyes sneering down at her. She pushes it away to where similar memories like Fang are stored. Then Velvetstar beckons her forward and the tabby leaps up onto the high log. She feels like it's been a while since she's been up here though she knows her "lost self" as she liked to think of it, had made a rediculous announcement from it not long ago. Lilywolf stares down at her clanmates and takes a deep breath, going over what she wanted to say to them. There was so much... Clearing her throat, the shecat begins, "My clanmates, you may already know but... Lily is gone... and I'm back." Lilywolf shudders slightly. Those words had a power over her. Saying them made it true. "And I just wanted to explain everything... it's the least I can do... Back two seasons ago I was hunting when I came across a badger den on the edge of our territory. I confirmed it was empty and was heading home to report it when I was attacked by its occupant. It's kinda a blur but I remember the final blow sent me reeling against a boulder and it was lights out." Though barely visable now, the badger scars across her face are silver in the moonlight. Lilywolf braces herself and continues, "After that... everything is a mess... it's hard to explain... like looking into a rippling pool of water. I knew what was happening but it was like another cat was doing it, not me... All I could do was watch. But I saw how kind you all were to me... even though I was not myself. I was practically an apprentice but you all stood by me and helped me with paitence and love." The shecat's ice blue eyes mist as her gaze falls on Flowernose, Cloudripple, Icynight, Flightpaw, Velvetstar, Icefire, all her kits, and of course, Goldenstripe. "That is something I will never forget. You could have given up on me but you didn't. Even when I hurt you, you cared for me. Thank you." Lilywolf shuffles her paws. "I feel responsible for all the pain that has occured recently. I'm sorry. You are my family and I hate to see you hurting. I hope we can move forward and heal now." The tabby smiles. "It feels like I've been asleep for a long time but I'm awake now." "I'd still be asleep if it wasn't for Goldenstripe." She thinks, knowing she needed some time just with him. "However through all the heartache, I'm happy to say my family is here as you know. I thought I'd never see them again so their coming to Horseclan is extra special. I know they'll be treated well." Lilywolf's eyes flicker to Rose and Wolf before landing on a yellow tabby tom. Sadness clutches her. River. "I'll still need to wrap some things up." She meows cautiously, her eyes also finding Cloudripple. "But I'm happy to tell you I'm back to normal and can serve the clan like I use to. And I'm proud to be apart of a clan of such good cats and friends!" The tabby fights back the emotions that threaten to swamp her and she rejoins Goldenstripe at the base of the high log where she presses against her savior, feeling whole and safe with him. ~ Lilywolf &hearts P.S. To see how Lilywolf returned, go to "horse cats" second result! Oh and I imagine "Wake Me Up" by Avicii in the background! Perfectly describes Lilywolf's situation and feelings!

    Velvetstar to Horseclan - Announcment

Okay guys, it's currently 10:01pm Monday for me, and tommorow afternoon me, Goldenstripe, and Mouse/Red/Wolf will be going out of town until (I have to check for sure) the 23rd. Goldenstripe will be busy, but me and Mouse will most likely be able to roleplay here and there while gone. I'd like to start advertising again, and encourage everyone to keep up rping. Hunting/border patrols don't happen as often anymore, and it's important to be as active as possible. Don't tell anyone, but Velvet's having kits soon so there will need to be rpers! ;D Also, I'm going to move our bio's to a book here so be prepared to update yours! Alrighty I believe that's all! While I'm gone, leave posts in my den about what's going on, any questions/problems, in result two, Velvet's den so I can keep up with y'all! -Velvetstar-

Cloudripple's eyes shone as she listened to Lilywolf speak. "Oh, thank you, StarClan," she breathed out. They had answered her prayers. At the end of her talk, she rose to her paws, cheering.

    Velvetstar to Horseclan

In the center of the camp, two large limestone rocks towered. Together they upheld an old log draped with vines and moss. At the top everything in camp and beyond is visible. From here, Horseclans future warriors and apprentices will be named, keeping the clan alive and active forever. -High Log-

    Great author

I was just introduced to Ms. Braun's The Cat Who books. They are so wonderful. If you own a cat or ever had you can really associate with these books. I have read several now and highly recommend you give her books a try. I read mystery books 95% of the time and these books fall in line with my likes.
