This is one of the earliest books I've read in the series, and I loved getting some of the background on Quill and how he came to Moosecounty and Pickax. The Siamese were a delight as always, both amusing and sleuthing Koko. The plot was very intriguing and I couldn't put it down. There was mystery, possible murder, apparent accidental death, theft, a smuggling ring, a heartbreaking suicide and more. All in all, this is one of the best Cat Who's I've ever read. Loved it.

I have loved this series since I have read the first one about 20 years ago.

I have read every book in the series at least three times. I had all of the books in hard cover and paper back, but I relocated into smaller quarters and gave most of my books away, the library and a charity. So, I am replacing my favorites on my NOOK Tablet so that I can re-read them at my leisure. I love this series. I love cats, I happen to be a Tonkineese lover, but they are so like the old fashioned Siamese. This is a series that makes you feel like part of the family. I was so sorry when the series ended with the author's death. I had been reading the books since she published the third book in the early 1980's. I recommend the series to anyone who loves cats and a playful mystery. They make a wonderful read on quiet summer day. Of course, I read them all year round, but I admit that I most enjoyed them lounging under a tree in the back yard on a beautiful summer day. Try reading the series in order, it makes the experience more fun. You will fall in love with Jim and his two furry side-kicks as well.
