Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
While the 10th entry in the ``Cat Who'' series is enjoyable and has its charms, it is less a mystery than a recital of how veteran reporter and millionaire Jim Qwilleran and his feline companions, Koko and Yum Yum, spent their vacation, and an account of the people they encountered. Moreover, most of the plot development occurs near the end, so the denouement appears contrived. Fiftyish bachelor ``Qwill'' decides to spend the summer at a lakefront cottage near the resort town of Mooseville. His vision of an idyllic respite is shattered from the moment he arrives. Almost everything in the house needs repair and Qwill could use more space; adding a wing is the logical solution, but he learns that most such jobs are done by itinerant builders. Fortunately, Clem Cottle, a local handyman, accepts the project, but he soon disappears, the third carpenter in recent months to vanish; two others met with fatal freak accidents. When Clem's replacement, Iggy Small, misses work, and his corpse is found in Qwill's basement, our vacationing hero suspects a serial killer and begins to investigate. Of course, the intelligent Koko helps solve the crime. For inveterate Braun ( The Cat Who Sniffed Glue ) fans only. Mystery Guild main selection, Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternate selections. (Mar.)

Truly a Classic for Qwill and his Gang of Crimebusters!

This is one of the very first Cat Who books that I ever had the privelage of reading. It captivated me, and took me into a world of crime and mystery that I had never known before. Now, because of Lilian Jackson Braun, I look at most mystery books in a new light. There was nothing I didn't enjoy about this adventure with Qwilleran and his two intellectual Siamese Koko and Yum Yum. You will enjoy this book as one of the best of the series; and if you are reading this as one of the many Cat Who books, you're in for a real 'treat' as Qwilleran might venture.

A delightful read, fun and relaxing

I have read every book in the series at least three times. I had all of the books in hard cover and paper back, but I relocated into smaller quarters and gave most of my books away, the library and a charity. So, I am replacing my favorites on my NOOK Tablet so that I can re-read them at my leisure. I love this series. I love cats, I happen to be a Tonkineese lover, but they are so like the old fashioned Siamese. This is a series that makes you feel like part of the family. I was so sorry when the series ended with the author's death. I had been reading the books since she published the third book in the early 1980's. I recommend the series to anyone who loves cats and a playful mystery. They make a wonderful read on quiet summer day. Of course, I read them all year round, but I admit that I most enjoyed them lounging under a tree in the back yard on a beautiful summer day. Try reading the series in order, it makes the experience more fun. You will fall in love with Jim and his two furry side-kicks as well.

    Owlfeather's Curse ~ Chapter 6

(Luckly, I decided completely on her curse. Applications are closed. I am so sorry. Yellowfox is actually Littlefox.)
"Dead?" Owlpaw couldn't belive her ears. "She couldn't be!" Cats gasped. Others stared in shock. Yarrowfoot, Littlefox's sister, let out a choked sob and ran to her, sobbing. Owlpaw bowed her head.
Just then, a patrol ran in. "Littlefox is dead!" Mudsky, the leader of the patrol, yowled. "We know who did it!" They announced proudly. Owlpaw turned in shock. They did? "A dark cat with blue eyes. White markings." Mudsky mewed. All eyes went to Nightpaw. She staggered back, looking to Owlpaw for help.
"Nightpaw didn't do it!" Shadowpaw's yowl broke the silence. Rainstar nodded. "Mudsky, I have to agree with Shadowpaw. Around the time Shadowpaw came, Nightpaw was sitting by me." Owlpaw nodded. Mudsky snarled, "She could have set a trap." Rainstar stepped foward. "I thought you said the cat /attacked/ Littlefox." Owlpaw was confused. What was going on? Nightpaw gave he a questioning look and she shrugged.
"A rouge did it!" Shadowpaw yowled. "A rouge?" Rainstar mewed. "Nightpaw use to be a rouge." Mudsky argued. Rainstar shook his head. "Nightpaw wouldn't kill anyone. We will talk about this later. For now, let's set aside some time for Littlefox's vigil." Owlpaw nodded and sat next to Nightpaw, watching Littlefox and the cats. She felt like crying, remembring Littlefox's kindness and Yarrowfoot's wail. She watched Rainstar sit vigil with a bunch of other cats. A soft tail touched hers.
"Mom." Owlpaw mewed. Her mother gave a soft purr and touched her head with her tail tip. Owlpaw smiled a sad grateful smile. Blossomfall got up and joined the weeping cats. Another cat sat next to her. Shadowpaw. "Hi." She mewed softly. Shadowpaw looked into her eyes, serious. "Promise never to tell what I am going to say to you?" Owlpaw nodded, feeling numb. A strange sensation ran through her and Shadowpaw's eyes, green and trusting filled her brain. She would keep this secret. Shadowpaw mewed quietly, so quiet only she could hear, "I killed Littlefox."
(Ha ha! Anoter cliffie! Hope you enjoyed!) ~ TMS
