Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Elizabeth C Chiang, MD, PhD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book discusses the evaluation of patients for cataract surgery, surgical instruments and microscopes, and the steps of the surgery.
Purpose: The first in a series of five books, this one is intended to guide young cataract surgeons learning phacoemulsification cataract surgery, focusing on the basics.
Audience: It is written for residents or ophthalmologists learning phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
Features: The book discusses the surgical instruments and equipment used for cataract surgery, the preoperative examination of a patient for cataract surgery, and the surgical steps, with a discussion of the techniques. The medications used during surgery are covered, as is the prevention of endophthalmitis. The book has beautiful illustrations and a number of images. However, it is not quite complete. For example, it mentions instances where retrobulbar block may be preferable, but does not state how to perform a retrobulbar block. The chapter on evaluating the cataract could be expanded. It also references a posterior polar cataract, but does not note the higher complication rate with posterior capsular defect associated with this kind of cataract. The discussion of the side-port incision does not mention the different types of blades that can be used. It also does not cover discussing with patients the different lens choices (monofocal/multifocal/accommodating lens/toric lens), although the book is focused on the preoperative evaluation, and it does not address planning for astigmatism correction.
Assessment: This book is easy to read and contains a lot of good information for beginning cataract surgeons. However, there are gaps. These topics may be covered in other books in the series, but on its own, this one seems incomplete. There are many complete one-volume cataract books, and this one is not so large to necessitate breaking the topics up into a five-book series.
