Overview

The classic biography of reggae legend Bob Marley, updated and revised for the twenty-fifth anniversary of his death

Bob Marley left an indelible mark on modern music, both as a reggae pioneer and as an enduring cultural icon. Catch a Fire, now a classic of rock biography, delves into the life of the leader of a musical, spiritual, and political explosion that continues today.

Under the supervision of the author's widow and with the collaboration of a Marley expert, this fourth edition contains a wealth of new material, including many revisions made by the author before his untimely death. An appendix to the new edition chronicles Marley's legacy in recent years, as well as the ongoing controversy over the possibility that Marley's remains might be exhumed from Nine Mile, Jamaica, and reburied in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where hundreds of Rastafarians live. The new edition also contains an expanded discography and is factually updated throughout.

"Probably the finest biography ever written about a popular musician."

San Francisco Chronicle

"As close as rock journalism comes to transcendent literature."

—Playboy

"White has a deep appreciation for reggae's immediacy, hypnotic power, and contradictions . . . An exhaustively researched labor of love."

Chicago Sun-Times

This book chronicles the life and career of Bob Marley and the milieu that shaped his spiritual and political beliefs. Now includes information on Jamaica's troubled music business.

Meet the Author

One of the most prominent music journalists of the twentieth century, Timothy White wrote extensively on Marley, reggae, and Caribbean music and culture for Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and other leading publications. His close contact with Marley and his family and inner circle of friends led to White being granted access to private papers, photographs, and memorabilia. White died in 2002.

    A dim fire!

I really was excited about reading Catch A Fire by Timothy White but the book picks up and leaves the reader dumbfounded. I enjoyed reading the book with intentions on learning more but Mr. White does not tie all the information together for the average reader to understand! Only those previously knowledgeable Marley Fans Read!

Catch a Fire: The Life of Bob Marley

One must be cautious about those we make our leaders and legends. This carefully executed biography makes that point effectively. Fellow Marley biographer Chris Salewicz praised White's book for its 'gifted, accurate touch that recalls the best of Garcia Marquez,' and Marquez's own work explored the dangers of simplifying heroes and leaders. As White shows, Marley was more than a music star, and Marley's most important legacy may be that he saw there was a war against the poor in the Caribbean and he fought back with al

Catch a Fire: The Life of Bob Marley

Mountainous research into the songs and the person behind them help the reader learn a lot quickly. But the bigger value is that it's a history book, not a pop bio, and lends awareness of the politics and social pressures too. Vivid jou

Catch a Fire: The Life of Bob Marley

Musn't take leaders or legends at face value. Fellow Marley biographer Chris Salewicz compares White's study to 'the best of Garcia Marquez,' whose warnings about leaders were the same. This carefully-executed treatise shows there was a war against the poor in the Caribbean and Marley fought back with all he
