Overview

Like ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE, the engaging Beatles tribute from the Music for Little People's For Kids series, CATCH A WAVE offers baby-boomer-era hits rendered by non-celebrity teenage performers (except for guitarist Jonathan McEuen, son of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's John McEuen). Instead of tunes by the Fab Four, though, this album features Beach Boys standards and other surf-era classics. While parents who fondly remember the originals may yearn to hear Carl Wilson and Mike Love instead of the tyro vocalists on CATCH A WAVE, most kids won't know the difference -- and one thing this collection proves is that no matter who's singing them, these are truly terrific songs. Bright, bouncy, insanely catchy, and sparkling with pre-Vietnam innocence, the tracks on CATCH A WAVE were made for singing along with, at top volume. The cream of the Beach Boys' crop is here in the form of "Surfin' Safari," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Kokomo," "Surfin' USA," "All Summer Long," and the ever-sublime "In My Room." Brian Hyland's "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" makes an appearance, as does (naturally) the Surfaris' "Wipe Out." Bottom line: CATCH A WAVE is fun, fun, fun, and perfect summer listening for those lengthy car trips.
