Overview

Steven Spielberg’s identity-fraud caper Catch Me if You Can is a change of pace for nearly all involved, and that includes composer John Williams. For this breezy chase flick starring Leonardo DiCaprio, as a young con man with a talent for check kiting and impersonation, and Tom Hanks, as the federal agent hot on his tail, Williams forgoes his usual grand operatic bombast (think: Star Wars and Indiana Jones) for a jazzy turn. Williams’s tart, midcentury-modern fragments weave in and out of the movie’s globetrotting scenario, incorporating such classics as Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly with Me,” Judy Garland’s “Embraceable You,” and -- with a nod to cinematic history -- Dusty Springfield’s delicious “The Look of Love,” originally recorded for the Casino Royale soundtrack. Balancing the classic pop selections is Williams’s “Father and Son” and “A Broken Home,” which lend the score a tender sheen. With its entertaining mix of nostalgic and original material, this is one soundtrack you’ll want to catch while you can.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
The bulk of the soundtrack album to the caper film Catch Me If You Can is comprised of the score by John Williams, a frequent collaborator with the movie's director, Steven Spielberg. Though Spielberg writes in his brief sleeve note that Williams has "composed a score in the idiom of progressive jazz prevalent in the '50s and '60s," you're not going to confuse this with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, or Dave Brubeck. No one has such unreasonable expectations, of course. But the fact is that this is pretty standard whimsical suspense movie soundtrack music, with some sax solos providing jazzy colors. Breaking up the instrumental score are a handful of quality mid-20th century easy listening pop tunes (in their original versions): Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me," Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto's "The Girl from Ipanema," Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song," Judy Garland's "Embraceable You," and Dusty Springfield's "The Look of Love."
