Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beth-Anne White
This is the first volume in the four-book "Jewel Society" series. These books were previously released under the titles of "Jewel Thieves." Each book in the series focuses on a different jewel: ruby, diamond, emerald, and sapphire. The gems are sparkly and so beautiful, what girl would not be attracted by them? Hope McLean has written a book about four friends who work together on an elite academic team. Readers will enjoy the academic aspects of the series stories, as the characters share different types of academic knowledge and learning. But this book has more than just learning; it has a mystery to solve! The Jewels must work together to solve the mystery of the stolen ruby necklace. A fun adventure begins that will continue through the series. Parents can feel comfortable with their children reading these books, which have the elements of thrill but are appropriate for the age level. Reviewer: Beth-Anne White

This book was pretty good. It reminded me of The Boxcar Children

This book was pretty good. It reminded me of The Boxcar Children in a lot of ways. I felt like the mystery was well planned and the book moved at a nice pace. The writing was clean and simple, and the characters were entertaining. This series will appeal to most girls ages 8 - 12.

A few things bothered me about the book. The main one was that the dialogue didn't sound realistic to me. The other thing was the abrupt ending. I am a fan of complete stories, even if it's part of a series. This ending was left wide open, with no real resolution.

That being said, this is still a good book with the potential to get even better as the series continues.
