Overview

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

As Recommended by Stephenie Meyer and Charlaine Harris.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark won the annual competition described in Hunger Games, but the aftermath leaves these victors with no sense of triumph. Instead, they have become the poster boys for a rebellion that they never planned to lead. That new, unwanted status puts them in the bull's-eye for merciless revenge by The Capitol. Catching Fire maintains the adrenaline rush of Suzanne Collins's series launch.
Barbara Ward
World-weary after her historic victory during the Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen finds her life forever changed. She and her fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark embark on the requisite Victory Tour, where there are hints of rebellion in several of the districts. Inspired by her earlier example of defiance, citizens have taken to wearing the mockingjay pin Katniss wears. There are twists, turns, and unexpected developments as Katniss faces possible betrayal at every turn. The action in this sequel to Hunger Games never lets up, with hints of things to come and wrongs to be righted. All of the secondary characters are fleshed out effectively. President Snow's palpable hatred for Katniss oozes throughout his plans for the Seventyfifth Hunger Games. Readers will groan in frustration at the book's conclusion, since there are so many loose ends. The tantalizing hints of a possible District 13 guarantee more surprises for readers. Reviewer: Barbara Ward
From The Critics
I really liked The Hunger Games. But I love the new book, Catching Fire…Collins has done that rare thing. She has written a sequel that improves upon the first book…Katniss is more sophisticated in this book, and her observations are more acute. We see this when she notices how much more difficult it is to kill people once you know them, or when she observes the decadent (and for the reader perhaps uncomfortably familiar) citizens of the Capitol gorging and then taking pills to make themselves vomit, or with her gradual realization that she may just stand for something greater than herself. All this is accomplished with the light touch of a writer who truly understands writing for young people: the pacing is brisk and the message tucked below the surface.

I got an ARC, but didn't want to write a review until now...

While considerably darker than The Hunger Games, Catching Fire was an immensely thrilling book. An indispensable quality of writing with a voice true to the character teamed with an overwhelming plot full of blood-curdling twists and heart-wrenching turns ensure Catching Fire a special home on my bookshelf. Catching Fire is most definitely the best YA novel to present itself to me in years. The ending does not merely leave you hanging precariously off the edge of your seat, but gives you the sensation of being shoved out of a moving plane. Quite frankly, I loved it.

    A Superb Sequel

Surviving the Hunger Games isn't enough. When Katniss and Peeta return home to District 12, nothing is the same. They live in the luxurious houses of the Victors' Village and want for nothing, yet all around them, life is getting harder, not just in the Seam. Their defiance of the Capitol in the Games continues to have consequences, far beyond anything they could have predicted. Rules are becoming more strict, punishments more severe, and fear becomes the order of the day. It's no isolated occurrence- while on their Tribute Tour, they see the same things happening in the other districts, some of them just shy of outright rebellion. Still, Katniss has no intention of being a figurehead for a revolution that would leave everything she loves like the smoldering, radioactive ruins of District 13.
And then, once again, the rules change, and Katniss has to face the unthinkable.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book and it just about KILLED me when I got to the last line. Told in Katniss' unflinching voice, the story grabs your heart from page one and doesn't let go until long after the book is done. On a purely technical note, the writing is fantastic, spare and yet clearly painting for us the world she lives in and the people who populate it. The story builds steadily, taking well supported twists and turns and never losing the incredible suspense that makes it impossible to put the book down.
I cannot wait until the third one comes out, and it's actually a little painful to have to wait another year for it. It ends (no, I'm not giving it away) on perhaps the most EVIl cliffhanger ever printed in a published book. I absolutely recommend this for everyone. The series is a little grim, perhaps even a little dark, but its stark outlook into the future makes it captivating. It's not one to stand alone, Hunger Games does need to be read first, but it's absolutely stunning. Please, please read this amazing book.

    Leaves you hungry for more!

I loved the first book so much I managed to get my hands on an ARC for Catching Fire. I finished the book in one sitting and it is just as extraordinary as the first. It picks up almost right where the first book leaves off with Katniss and Peeta's return home to District 12. This book focuses less on the Games and more on the unrest that Peeta and Katniss' defiance of the Capitol has created throughout most of the Districts. It is just as gut wrenching and heart breaking as the first. The story is chilling and draws the reader into the harsh yet frighteningly realistic dystopian society of Panem. Collins is a magnificent writer and I can't wait to read the third and final book!

Reviewed by K. Osborn Sullivan for TeensReadToo.com

When I picked up THE HUNGER GAMES, it immediately became "The Book" that I recommended to everyone who would listen. I stayed up until the wee hours every night to see what happened next. I blogged about it. I named a stray kitten "Rue." Not surprisingly, when I got my greedy hands on a copy of its sequel, CATCHING FIRE, I practically tore off the cover in my eagerness to dive in. Happily, the second installment of this compelling series did not disappoint. Now the only problem is waiting for the third book in this exciting trilogy.

CATCHING FIRE picks up six months after Kat and Peeta won the Hunger Games. Despite being a national hero and having the ability to provide a nice house and plenty of food for her family, Kat is still worried. She managed to win the Hunger Games, despite the Panem government's plans. Her behavior is viewed by the evil President Snow as defiance, which is never tolerated. She is a well-known, popular figure, so the president will not kill her outright, but Kat lives in fear that at any moment, she and those she loves could be punished for her actions.

Soon Kat learns that her performance in the Hunger Games arena had far-reaching consequences. In beating the government at its own game the previous year, Kat unintentionally demonstrated that the all-powerful President Snow is not quite so all-powerful. Now President Snow expects Kat to prove that she is a loyal citizen who doesn't support the anti-government rumblings that are spreading throughout the country. Her support is vital since it was her act of defiance that ignited the rumblings to begin with. And if she doesn't succeed to President Snow's satisfaction, her family and friends will pay the price.

CATCHING FIRE is a gripping follow-up to THE HUNGER GAMES. All the same characters are back - with the exception of those who were killed in Book #1, of course. Even more than in THE HUNGER GAMES, Kat is largely clueless about the strategies and plots that are going on around her. At times, this can be trying for the reader because by now she should know that everyone has an agenda, and if you're not directing the game, then you're a pawn. Still, her strength is an extraordinary instinct for survival. It's ironic that the Capitol government which created the Hunger Games and tries so hard to keep its people feeling helpless is also responsible for creating a person like Kat. She gained her skills and toughness by surviving unspeakably brutal conditions.

One key difference between the two books is that in THE HUNGER GAMES, reality TV was painted as a villain. A voyeuristic public's desire to be entertained by the suffering of others forced Hunger Games competitors to behave in inhuman ways. The oppressive government that created the competition was largely an ever-present background threat. In CATCHING FIRE, however, the government's cruelty is front and center as its boot heel presses ever harder on the throats of its people. The role of television and at-home audiences shifts in this book, and they become more of a weapon against the government than against the people......

    So Excited!

I don't usually write a reviews on a book that has not come out, but this one is special! I am so in love with the first book, Hunger Games! I also recently found out on a fansite for the books that a producer company has bought the rights to make the first one into a movie and all I have to say is they better do it right! But other than that I am full of excitement to see what happens in this amazing series! I hope they will stop changing their minds on when the book comes out! These books are totally worth spending the money to get them in hardcover. It says paperback, but it has to be a mistake bacause the first one was in hardcover and the pricing is about the same as this one.

The 1st was unforgettable, sure this will be too!!

I read about "The Hunger Games" on Stephenie Meyer's website like so many others. But I found the book at the bookstore completely on accident! I wasn't exactly sure I would like it! So I decided to sit down in the bookstore and read the first chapter, after that let's say I found the money to pay for this book! There was no stopping me once I got to the 2nd chapter!! I learned how to read and cook at the same time, because of this book. I didn't do all of my homework (that's a big thing for me! I unfortunately had to do it all in class) because I had to finish it! But once I was done reading, I couldn't stop but think about how realistic it kind of is. The idea of Panem isn't really that far fetched!! I sooooo cannot wait for "Catching Fire" thank goodness it comes out the day after my birthday! This book is at the top of my Wish List!! (Oh and it's highlighted bright yellow too, can't miss it!)

    CANNOT WAIT TIL SEPTEMBER!

The Hunger Games is the best book I have ever read. I'm not fan of romance books but this book leads into it perfectly. I wanted to read it cover to cover but school got in the way. I can't wait until September, when I should be getting ready for school to start I'm going to be reading but if Catching Fire is as good as The Hunger Games getting grounded for reading instead of getting prepared for school will be way worth it.

    Was not disappointed at all

I had read "The Hunger Games" last year and fell in love with the story and the characters. I couldn't wait until "Catching Fire" came out to know what happened next to Katniss, Peeta, Gale and the rest of District 12 and the wait was well worth it. This book was excellent, a page turner and a definite re-read. I can't wait for the next and final book in the series.
