Nessuno che avesse veduto Caterina Morland negli anni della sua infanzia, avrebbe supposto che fosse nata per divenire un'eroina... Caterina è stato considerato un romanzo satirico e in parte lo è, ma solo in parte. La protagonista è una lettrice appassionata di romanzi gotici di fine Settecento, ma non per questo è una ragazza invasata o svagata, anzi è capace di ottimi giudizi, è piena di entusiasmo e anche di senso critico.
