Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Learn about the metamorphic cycle of a butterfly with lots of close-up, color snapshots to illustrate and support the text. See the different stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Find out what some of the butterflies do during the different life stages to survive against predators. The straightforward, simple information includes mating for the next generation of butterflies. One of the captioned pictures shows a butterfly laying eggs on a leaf's surface. There are some captioned diagrams that show the different stages of life, the caterpillar molting its skin, and the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. Some readers may need some guidance about how to navigate the main text and the captions on the layout. There is a glossary that lists the bold print words from the main text; the index provides a means to locate most of the words from the glossary in the main body of the text. At the back of the book is a list of ideas and tips for parents and teachers. This book is one of six in the "Life Cycles" series which covers different animals and a plant; it would have been nice to have a book that also examined an insect that goes through an incomplete metamorphosis for comparison.
